01 / Introduction

## About Ahmed Alsabaawi

The City’s list of certified candidates shows Ahmed Alsabaawi’s nomination for Ward 24 Barrhaven East dated August 19, 2026, and shows him as not registered in the City’s Contribution Rebate Program as of the list updated August 31, 2026. The City list gives him a website. His campaign site links two Facebook pages.

His campaign letter to the ward says he completed a sociology degree at Birzeit University, worked in community and family rehabilitation, trained in news reporting in London and New York, earned a master’s degree in Saskatchewan, worked in newcomer settlement services and gave direct family support to people struggling with addiction, and moved to Ottawa to pursue a PhD at Carleton University. In the CTV News Ottawa questionnaire he says he was a student union member at the University of Regina during graduate studies, has been a member of federal political parties and has been a community activist for the last 20 years, in his words, and has lived in Ottawa for eleven years. In the CBC News questionnaire he says he supervised social work students and ran a rehabilitation program for vulnerable people, which included budgeting and financing. In the Barrhaven Bugle he says he has a career in community organization and a master’s degree in social studies. voche.me did not check his education or work with the bodies named, and did not find whether he finished the PhD.

His campaign site lists eight commitments: affordable and reliable transportation, a train to Barrhaven (he would push for light rail and rail expansion), more bridges and fewer traffic jams, better roads, lower property taxes, open decision making, safer neighbourhoods and more recreation centres. In the CBC News questionnaire he says the City’s biggest challenge is easing travel from Barrhaven to downtown and to universities, that he would support no property tax increase in 2027 and would aim for a balanced budget, and that he would freeze transit fares to study the situation. In the CTV News Ottawa questionnaire he says he would not increase the police budget until he understands where the increase would go, and does not support an infrastructure levy (an extra charge for roads and sewers) for now. He names an overpass or underpass where road traffic crosses the train tracks on Woodroffe, and in the Barrhaven Bugle an overpass for Hunt Club and Prince of Wales, as ways to reduce accidents and traffic jams. These are his own statements. The sources read hold no complaint against him.
