The Vancouver School Board and Vancouver Police Department have both opened investigations after reports that male students at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary created AI-generated images of female classmates, Global News reported on October 15.

The Vancouver School Board confirmed it is aware of "inappropriate behaviour involving some Grade 12 students" and said it is "taking the matter seriously." In a statement, the board said the school is gathering information and supporting students who may have been affected, but said it cannot share details about individual students.

The Vancouver Police Department said it is in contact with the school and the board. "An investigation is underway," VPD said in a statement, adding it could not comment further at this stage.

At least one student received a short suspension, according to Global News. The total number of students involved has not been disclosed by the school or the board.

**What the law says**

Canada amended the Criminal Code in summer 2026 to classify AI-generated images depicting real people, particularly minors, as potential child exploitation material. Global News cited this legal context in its reporting on the Churchill Secondary investigation.

**Why this matters for the school board election**

Voters elect nine Vancouver School Board trustees on October 17. Those trustees will govern VSB policy on student safety, digital conduct rules, and how the board responds to incidents involving technology. None of the school board candidates had commented publicly on this specific case as of October 16.

Voters can review profiles of each school board candidate at [/nominations](/nominations) on this site.

**How to vote on October 17**

Polling stations across Vancouver are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 17. Voters can find their nearest location at [/where-to-vote](/where-to-vote). Mail-in ballots must reach designated drop-off points by 8 p.m. on October 17 to be counted.
