Vancouver police issued a road safety warning on October 27 after a 45-year-old woman was struck and killed by an SUV in the city's Strathcona neighbourhood, the second pedestrian collision in Vancouver in three days, according to Daily Hive Vancouver.

The fatal collision took place shortly after midnight on Sunday, October 25, at Main Street and National Avenue. The Vancouver Police Department said the driver was travelling southbound and the woman was thrown. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with police. "The Vancouver Police Department is again urging pedestrians and drivers to be careful on the road," police said in a statement cited by Daily Hive. "This is the second pedestrian struck within just a few days in the city." The VPD said alcohol and substance use are not believed to be factors in the collision.

Three days earlier, on the evening of October 22, a seven-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle at East Pender Street and Victoria Drive. She was injured but has since been released from hospital with minor injuries, Daily Hive reported.

Vancouver operates under a Vision Zero road safety plan, which sets a goal of eliminating all deaths and serious injuries on city streets. The plan includes lower speed limits on residential streets, improved crosswalk markings, and targeted enforcement.

Both incidents involved marked intersections in east Vancouver. Vancouver Police did not announce a specific enforcement campaign in the October 27 statement, but asked all road users to take more care. Pedestrians should use marked crosswalks and wait for signals before crossing. Drivers should reduce speed in residential and commercial areas, especially in wet or low-light conditions at night. Anyone who witnesses a collision should call 911 if someone is injured. To report information or share dashcam footage related to a collision, call the VPD non-emergency line at 604-717-3321.
