Vancouver Fire Rescue Services is asking drivers to avoid residential streets between 5 and 9 pm on Halloween night and reminding residents that fireworks remain banned across the city, with fines up to $1,000, the City of Vancouver stated October 27.

"Halloween brings our communities together, and everyone has a role to play in making it a safe and enjoyable night," said VFRS Interim Fire Chief Trevor Connelly in the City's notice. "We encourage everyone to plan ahead, avoid driving during peak trick-or-treating hours wherever possible, check decorations for fire hazards and help trick-or-treaters stay visible."

## Fireworks banned, patrols planned

Fireworks are prohibited in Vancouver. Residents who see illegal fireworks should call 3-1-1 or use the Van311 app. VFRS said its crews will patrol communities on Halloween night to discourage illegal fireworks use.

## Decoration and costume fire safety

The City advises using battery-powered candles rather than open flames, keeping decorations away from heat sources, walkways and exits, and not overloading electrical outlets or power bars. VFRS says a few simple precautions can prevent emergencies and make Halloween safer for everyone.

For light-up costumes and accessories, VFRS says to use only approved chargers and to charge devices on hard surfaces away from anything that can catch fire. A battery that becomes hot, swollen or damaged, or that produces smoke, should be stopped immediately.

## Trick-or-treating safely

VFRS asks trick-or-treaters to carry a flashlight and add reflective tape to costumes or treat bags. Travelling in groups and sticking to sidewalks and crosswalks helps drivers see trick-or-treaters during dark evening hours.

Drivers who do need to use residential streets between 5 and 9 pm should slow down and watch for trick-or-treaters coming from unexpected directions, the City says.

Halloween is October 31. Residents can find more fire safety information at the City of Vancouver's fire safety and prevention page at [vancouver.ca](https://www.vancouver.ca/home-property-development/learn-about-fire-safety-and-prevention.aspx).
