Nearly 5,000 Vancouver voters chose [ROLLERGIRL](/candidates/rollergirl) for City Council in the October 17 election, Daily Hive reported Tuesday. She was not elected, but she finished ahead of 10 other council candidates in the preliminary count out of 55 total.

Daily Hive spoke with several voters to ask why they cast a ballot for ROLLERGIRL, an independent candidate who has run in previous Vancouver elections.

## What voters said

One voter told Daily Hive they had no information about the other candidates and gave her their only council vote. Another said she performs well for an independent and has done so in past elections. A third said they liked the idea of her skating into a council meeting. One Daily Hive reporter said they voted for her out of personal irreverence, noting they occasionally vote for unusual independent candidates as a personal choice.

## Who is ROLLERGIRL

Daily Hive describes ROLLERGIRL as a long-known figure in Vancouver who ran for mayor in 2018. Daily Hive reports she previously spent time in prison, citing reports of a conviction for a violent offence. Readers who want full background on those reports should read the Daily Hive article directly. Her name is ROLLERGIRL, which is how the City of Vancouver printed it on the ballot.

## How her result compares

The preliminary results, which Daily Hive published on October 18, show the ten elected councillors received between 57,788 and 83,038 votes. [Sean Orr](/candidates/sean-orr) of COPE received 83,038 votes, the highest total for any council candidate. [Lucy Maloney](/candidates/lucy-maloney) of OneCity received 63,143 votes and finished sixth. Daily Hive reports that ROLLERGIRL received nearly 5,000 votes in the same count, placing her 46th among 55 council candidates by Daily Hive's count.

The official results are expected to be declared by October 21, when the chief election officer is required under the Vancouver Charter to complete that step.

## What this means for the full count

The preliminary results name only the ten elected council seats and their vote totals. The full breakdown for all 55 candidates, including ROLLERGIRL's exact count, will be published with the official results. You can follow the results as they are updated at [/results](/results).
