Pete Fry was elected mayor of Vancouver on October 17, 2026, defeating incumbent Ken Sim in the preliminary count. The Globe and Mail reports he is the first person to hold a mayoral office under a Green party banner in any major Canadian city.

Fry told the Globe that community safety is his "top priority." He has pledged to create an office of community safety that would bring together police, fire, community services, and land use planning. Alongside it, Fry has committed to setting up a 24/7 team of non-police responders for calls that do not require an officer.

The Globe and Mail also reports that Fry has pledged to lift the moratorium on supportive housing projects, a policy introduced by outgoing mayor Ken Sim. Fry said during the campaign: "We hear loud and clear from folks that they are struggling with quality of life in the city."

## A council that can work with him

The preliminary results show the new council will have ten members. The Globe and Mail reports four are from the Green Party, four from the Coalition of Progressive Electors (COPE), one from OneCity, and one from ABC Vancouver. ABC held a majority under Sim; the Globe reports it has been reduced to a single seat.

Fry has been a Vancouver city councillor since 2018, according to the Globe. He ran as the Green Party of Vancouver's mayoral candidate and pulled 98,494 votes in the preliminary count, ahead of Sim's 41,040, according to results published by the City's preliminary count.

The preliminary count is not yet the official result. The City's chief election officer declares the official count before 4:00 pm on the fourth day after voting day, which falls on October 21, 2026.
