The Green Party of Vancouver published a challenge on October 9 asking Mayor [Ken Sim](/candidates/ken-sim) to debate [Pete Fry](/candidates/pete-fry) in person on the steps of Vancouver City Hall on Wednesday, October 14. The party says it is requesting a public response from Sim confirming whether he will accept.

The party's post states two different times for the proposed debate on the same page: 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. The Green Party has not published a correction, so the exact time cannot be confirmed from this source.

The party framed the challenge around attendance at campaign forums. According to the Green Party's post, Ken Sim was absent from more than eight mayoral debates and forums during the campaign, including events organized by UBC, The Tyee, the Metro Vancouver Alliance, and the Association of Neighbourhood Houses. That count is the Green Party's own. ABC Vancouver has not published a response to it.

"Vancouverites deserve a mayor who shows up and answers their questions," the Green Party's post quotes Fry as saying.

## What the challenge proposes

The Green Party's post names four topics the party says the debate would cover: housing and affordability, community safety, city services, and accountability at City Hall. The post does not name a moderator or a formal host. It describes the setting as the front steps of City Hall and says the format would be a one-on-one exchange.

No response from Ken Sim or ABC Vancouver has been reported as of October 9.

## The mayoral race going into the final week

The two candidates are among the five who took part in the October 8 Vancouver Sun debate, which also included Kareem Allam, Rebecca Bligh, and Colleen Hardwick. A Canada Pulse Insights poll published on October 9 and commissioned by Rogers OMNI TV put Fry at 28 percent and Sim at 27 percent among all respondents. The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 4.4 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, meaning the one-point gap does not clear the poll's own measure of precision.

## What voters can do

If the debate takes place, it would be on the steps of Vancouver City Hall, 453 West 12th Avenue, on Wednesday, October 14. Election day is Saturday, October 17. To find your polling place or check hours, visit [where to vote](/where-to-vote).
