Armor Valor, a hospital cook and small business owner from South Vancouver, is running for one of Vancouver's 10 City Council seats with the Vancouver Liberals, the Philippine Canadian Inquirer reported on October 9.

Valor told the outlet he wants to bring the experience of people who work and run businesses in the city into local government. "The everyday life of everyday people" is how he described what he wants elected representatives to understand, according to the report.

## Background

According to the Philippine Canadian Inquirer, Valor was born and raised in South Vancouver and works as a cook at Children's and Women's Hospital, where he is a member of the Hospital Employees' Union. He also founded and owns KaonTa Chicken, a small business in South Vancouver.

The outlet reported he has served as a student-elected member of the Langara College Board of Governors since 2021 and previously held a seat on the Vancouver Community College Board of Governors from 2019 to 2020. He helped establish the first Filipino Student Association at Langara College and has served as a board member of Filipino BC, the report said.

## What he says he would do

The Philippine Canadian Inquirer reported that Valor's campaign focuses on three areas: reducing city rules and paperwork that make it harder to run a small business, supporting frontline workers who want to build their lives in Vancouver, and increasing representation for communities that have had less voice at City Hall.

The Vancouver Liberals' platform includes a proposal to create a Citizens' Assembly to examine whether Vancouver should adopt a ward system for electing councillors, with a referendum the party says it would hold in 2030 if elected, according to the report.

## The council race

Vancouver elects 10 city councillors at-large on October 17, meaning every voter chooses up to 10 names from the full ballot rather than voting in a single neighbourhood district. There are 56 candidates running for those 10 seats.

A voter who wants to know where each council candidate stands before October 17 can read their profile at [/candidates/armor-valor](/candidates/armor-valor) and compare across all parties.
