[Kirk LaPointe](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/kirk-lapointe) was elected mayor of West Vancouver on October 17 with 5,215 votes in the District's preliminary count. In a post on his campaign site on October 20, he wrote that residents had asked the new council to pursue "fiscal discipline, community renewal, and broader consultation, and more open and accountable government."

## The count

The North Shore News reported the preliminary count on election night. LaPointe had 43.6 per cent of the vote. Mayor Mark Sager had 3,799 votes, Sharon Thompson 2,510 and Joe Spears 428. The paper reported that 11,952 of 33,703 eligible voters cast a ballot, a turnout of 35 per cent.

The six councillors are [Tim Webb](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/tim-webb), who led with 5,381 votes, [Lee Lau](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/lee-lau), [Linda Watt](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/linda-watt), [Scott Snider](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/scott-snider), [Jaime Webbe](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/jaime-webbe) and [Peter Lambur](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/peter-lambur). Watt, Snider and Lambur sat on the last council. The five school trustees are [Felicia Zhu](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/felicia-zhu), [Sheelah Donahue](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/sheelah-donahue), [Richard Loat](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/richard-loat), [John Calimente](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/john-calimente) and [Karen Straith](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/karen-straith).

## What LaPointe said

On election night, LaPointe told the North Shore News that people want a larger part in decisions at district hall, and want their tax money treated with more respect. Voters also want the mayor to push harder for West Vancouver at Metro Vancouver, he said, and he called the wastewater treatment plant "a 30-year burden." As mayor, he said, he would spend more time listening to people.

In his October 20 post, he praised Sager and Thompson for their community service and wrote that he would be a mayor for every resident, whoever they voted for.

## His promises on these points

His platform of September 27 has promises on each point. On taxes, he promised to [bring the projected 2027 tax increase of nearly 7 per cent down to 3 per cent](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/kirk-lapointe#promise-cut-2027-tax-increase-to-3-percent) and to [hold spending growth after 2027 to half the rate of inflation](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/kirk-lapointe#promise-cap-spending-growth-half-of-inflation).

On consultation, he promised to [consult residents before staff choose a preferred option](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/kirk-lapointe#promise-consult-before-preferred-option), to [bring back citizen advisory committees](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/kirk-lapointe#promise-restore-advisory-committees) and to [hold Ask-Me-Anything meetings at Municipal Hall twice a month](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/kirk-lapointe#promise-twice-monthly-ask-me-anything). On open government, he promised [fewer closed council meetings](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/kirk-lapointe#promise-fewer-closed-meetings) and [published District contracts](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/kirk-lapointe#promise-publish-contracts).

For the wastewater plant, his platform promised to [demand a review by the province's Inspector of Municipalities](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/kirk-lapointe#promise-inspector-review-of-wastewater-plant) and to [seek a new cost formula with a longer repayment period](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/candidates/kirk-lapointe#promise-new-funding-formula-wastewater-plant).

Every one of these promises is marked not started. Residents can follow each one on the [West Vancouver promise tracker](/bc/west-vancouver-2026/tracker), where a status changes only when a council vote or an official document shows it.
