A community theatre production of Five Women Wearing the Same Dress opens tonight at the Bowen Theatre, with three more shows to follow over the next two Fridays and Saturdays, the Bowen Island Undercurrent reported on November 6, 2026.

Theatre on the Isle is presenting the play by Alan Ball, the screenwriter behind American Beauty and the television series Six Feet Under and True Blood. All four performances start at 7:15 pm and run about two hours, including a 10-minute intermission. The shows are on November 6, 7, 13 and 14 at the Bowen Theatre.

## The cast

Five of the six performers in the production appeared together in Dancing at Lughnasa, the Theatre on the Isle show that opened the Bowen Theatre in 2025. The five are Morgan Darcy, Molly Horton, Tina Overbury, Paola Qualizza and Claudia Schaefer.

Director Frazer Elliott told the Bowen Island Undercurrent that the cast continued meeting after Lughnasa ended, gathering for informal script reads. At one session, Schaefer brought Five Women Wearing the Same Dress. "Their chemistry is what drove them to continue their search for these plays back when it first started," Elliott said.

The one man in the play is Basel Hussein, who is new to the Bowen theatre scene. "When he left we looked at each other and went, 'Yeah, he's our guy,'" Elliott told the Undercurrent, adding that Hussein found the role in part through a Rowan Atkinson impression at an open casting session.

## The play

The story is set in Knoxville, Tennessee in the mid-1990s. Five bridesmaids, none of whom like the bride or the day's events, take shelter in a bedroom and talk through personal subjects that were largely taboo at the time, the Bowen Island Undercurrent reported.

Elliott described it as "a comedy, but there's some heavy moments in it as well." He said the production wanted to push into different territory for Theatre on the Isle. The dresses themselves are also part of the show: the cast found a matching style they described to the Undercurrent as "absolutely hideous," which fits what the bridesmaids in the play are made to wear.

This is Elliott's first time directing a production on his own, though he has held many roles with Bowen Island theatre groups over the years.

## Tickets and times

Tickets are available on Eventbrite. Residents can also find information by searching Theatre on the Isle on social media. The first show is tonight, November 6, at 7:15 pm at the Bowen Theatre on Bowen Island.
