Surrey is enforcing its fireworks ban tonight for Halloween and will do the same on November 8 for Diwali, with fines reaching $50,000 for anyone caught using or possessing fireworks without a permit.

The Surrey Now-Leader reported Saturday that the City has deployed bylaw enforcement officers in high-activity areas across Surrey. Officers are working with police and will respond to complaints, gather evidence, issue tickets and call in police as needed, according to a post on surrey.ca cited by the paper.

## What the ban covers

Surrey bans the sale, purchase, possession and use of fireworks without a permit from the City's Fire Services. That ban covers all fireworks, including consumer sparklers and aerial shells. It applies year-round, and enforcement is particularly active on nights when unsanctioned use is highest.

Diwali celebrations on November 8 are a second enforcement focus this week, the City says. Officers will return to high-activity areas on that date in the same way they are deployed tonight.

Surrey bylaws officer Grewal, in a video posted on Surrey's Facebook page, said fireworks can lead to fires, serious injuries, and distress for both people and pets, the Surrey Now-Leader reported.

## The fines

The City can issue fines of up to $50,000 for illegal use or possession, the Surrey Now-Leader reported from City information. That amount applies per violation, and it covers both the person using the fireworks and, separately, anyone found in possession without a permit.

A permit from Surrey Fire Services is the only way to use fireworks legally in Surrey. The article does not describe how to apply for one.

## What to do if you see illegal fireworks

The City asks residents not to call 911 unless there is a genuine emergency. Complaints about illegal fireworks should go to City of Surrey Bylaws at 604-591-4370.

Surrey's new council takes office on November 2. Bylaw enforcement decisions made tonight are the responsibility of the current administration.
