Senior Link Society, a Richmond nonprofit that has run monthly meetups for isolated and lonely seniors for 26 years, is looking for new board members after its president announced they are leaving.

The Richmond News reported Friday that founder Patricia Cruz is asking the community to step forward. "We want to let everybody know that we are looking for more board members who can carry on and continue with the vision and the mission of Senior Link," Cruz told the paper.

## What the society does

Senior Link supports seniors who have no nearby family or friends and may not feel comfortable at larger community centres. Cruz described the people she works with as older residents, often women over 70 or 80, who live alone in apartments.

Cruz told the Richmond News these seniors have no family or friends left nearby and live alone in their apartments with little contact.

The society runs monthly coffee meetups where isolated seniors can meet new people. It also provides networking, resources and education to help seniors stay independent.

## Why it needs board members now

Cruz told the Richmond News the society's president is leaving. The board currently includes members of different ages alongside regular senior volunteers. The society wants people who can carry forward its work.

Cruz estimated to the Richmond News that Richmond has about 16,000 seniors, with about 6,000 living in care facilities. Those are her own estimates. The rest, she said, often lack a reliable support network.

## How to get involved

People interested in joining the Senior Link board can find contact details at seniorlink.ca. The board includes members of different ages, and the society also works with regular senior volunteers.

Richmond seniors looking for a way to meet others can also visit seniorlink.ca for information about the society's monthly coffee meetups and other programs. Cruz said the meetups are open to seniors who want to make new connections, and no experience with community programs is needed to attend.
