01 / Introduction

## About Kenny Chiu

Kenny Chiu was elected to Richmond City Council on October 17, 2026. The City's official count gives him 13,119 votes, sixth of 55 candidates for the eight seats, three votes behind Laura Gillanders and 134 ahead of Andy Hobbs. The City's declaration of election by voting of September 21, 2026 prints Common Sense as his elector organization. Richmond News reported on October 18, 2026 that he was one of four new councillors, with Gary Law, Sheldon Starrett and Kevin Lai of Advance Richmond, and that the paper had asked him for comment on his election. No statement from him after the vote was found.

Richmond News reported on July 30, 2026 that he had announced his candidacy the day before with the Common Sense Alliance, with Thomas Leung and Glenda Strang for council and Alice Wong for trustee, that MP Chak Au was the group's policy adviser, and that Chiu had worked in Au's office since Au's election in 2025. He told the paper he was running for council and not for mayor. At the Richmond Poverty Reduction Coalition's council debate of October 8, 2026, Richmond News reported, he said the City cannot solve housing alone and needs the provincial and federal governments.

The House of Commons lists him as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Steveston-Richmond East from October 21, 2019 to September 19, 2021, vice-chair of the Subcommittee on International Human Rights in the second session of the 43rd Parliament, a member of the Citizenship and Immigration committee in 2020, and a candidate in that riding in 2015 (defeated), 2019 (elected) and 2021 (defeated). Richmond News reported on election night in 2019 that he had 17,193 votes, 41.8 per cent, and Global News reported in 2021 that Liberal Parm Bains had 42 per cent to his 33 per cent.

Richmond News printed his profile as a RITE candidate for school trustee in November 2011, described him as a Richmond School Board trustee in July 2013, and reported in 2014 that he would leave the board to pursue other political ambitions. In February 2024 the paper reported that he joined Sheldon Starrett's press conference against Council's motion to explore a supervised consumption site at Richmond Hospital.

By his own account, in the statement he gave the City and on his organization's candidates page, he was educated in Saskatchewan, is a software engineer with management experience, served on the board of the Mennonite Housing Society, has lived in Richmond since 1987, co-founded the Richmond Community Coalition, and is chief of staff and adviser to MP Chak Au. The 2011 Richmond News profile, written from his candidate submission, says he studied computational science at the University of Saskatchewan and came to Canada in 1989. voche.me has not checked these with the university or the housing society.

Research status

## What voche.me has checked

Researched on 2026-10-30 through the seven search steps listed below: the City's candidate profile, results and declarations, the Common Sense Alliance's home, Core Values and Pillars and Our Candidates pages, his VoteMate page with the 12 practical solutions, Richmond News reports of July 30, October 10 and October 18, 2026, of February 2024, of 2019 and 2021, and of 2011, 2013 and 2014, Global News reports of the 2019 and 2021 federal results, and the House of Commons' member and roles pages for him.

His account of his education, his software career, his Mennonite Housing Society board seat, his co-founding of the Richmond Community Coalition and his work in MP Chak Au's office comes from his own statement, his organization's page and the 2011 candidate profile he submitted, and was not checked with those bodies; Richmond News reported in July 2026 that he works in Au's office. His Facebook, Instagram and X accounts (RMDKenny) show a login page to scripts, so no post was read. Richmond News's search pages answer 403 to scripts, so its reports were found through web searches and a questionnaire page with his own answers, if one exists, was not found. The Richmond School District's site refuses scripts, and the Internet Archive holds no copy of its trustee page from his term, so his trustee years rest on Richmond News reports.
