01 / Introduction

## About Gary Law

Gary Law was elected to Richmond City Council on October 17, 2026. The City's official count, declared on October 21, 2026, gives him 15,759 votes, the most of any of the 55 council candidates. Richmond News reported that this was 207 votes more than Carol Day. The City's declaration of election by voting prints Advance Richmond as his elector organization. Richmond News reported that the organization, new in 2026, elected three councillors (Law, Sheldon Starrett and Kevin Lai) and three school trustees.

Richmond News describes him as a former RCMP officer. By his own account, on his campaign site, he served as an RCMP officer from 1995 to 2015, organized the Richmond RCMP Open Day in 1999, and served in the Canadian Army Reserve from 1989 to 2019, reaching the rank of Major. The organization's page on him says he later worked as a driving examiner with ICBC and now hosts a program on Fairchild Radio FM 96.1, and that he received the National Award for Police Community Relations; his site names two IODE police community relations awards from 2007. voche.me has not checked these with the RCMP, the Army Reserve, ICBC, Fairchild Radio or IODE. His site says he came to Canada from Hong Kong and speaks English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Elections BC's Statement of Votes for the general election of May 14, 2013 lists Gary Law as an independent candidate in Richmond Centre with 1,617 votes, 8.51 per cent. Richmond News reported in 2013 that Law, a Burnaby RCMP corporal and Richmond resident, announced the independent run after the BC Liberals pulled his nomination, and that police were investigating claims he had been threatened by texts and calls demanding he pull out of the nomination process. His own site lists the 2013 run among his public service.

His site says he announced his campaign on June 16, 2026, at a launch at a Richmond restaurant attended by MLA Teresa Wat, and quotes his speech: "Law for Safety. Law for Richmond." Richmond News reported in September 2026 that he was one of the three council candidates Advance Richmond had announced before four more joined. The organization's manager told the Richmond Poverty Reduction Coalition that its candidates could not attend the council debate of October 8, 2026, Richmond News reported. His site says he spoke at the City's public hearing of July 20, 2026 against renewing the Aster Place supportive housing permit without published results, and that he and the other Advance Richmond council candidates attended a rally outside City Hall on August 23, 2026 over how the City handled a complaint about an image in an article by Jason Liu, where he questioned the process the City followed.

In the statement he gave the City he described himself as a long-serving RCMP officer and promised to strengthen cooperation between the City, first responders, social service partners and neighbourhood groups, and to keep supportive housing, mental health services and policing coordinated and transparent. After the vote he told Richmond News that he would focus on seniors' safety, cyber crime, home safety, school safety and road safety, that raising taxes was not the best way to add police officers, and that he hoped to ask the officer in charge of Richmond RCMP for more auxiliary constables, a pilot CCTV project in high-crime areas, and regular meetings between the mayor, a councillor, the RCMP and citizens.
