Sara Lopez of Campbell River has announced her candidacy for BC NDP in the North Island riding, the Campbell River Mirror reported on October 1, 2026. Voting day is October 24.

Lopez has lived in Campbell River for over a decade and raised her children in their Kwakwaka'wakw and Nuu-chah-nulth communities, the Mirror reported. Her professional background is in non-profits, arts, culture, and social justice.

She currently serves as Executive Director of the Campbell River Art Gallery. In that role she challenged a Campbell River City Council decision to remove the Gallery's tax-exempt status and succeeded in reversing it, according to the Mirror. The Mirror published the candidacy announcement as a contributed article from the BC NDP campaign.

She also advocates for affordable housing through Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North.

"North Island families deserve good jobs, strong health care and a fair shot at an affordable life," Lopez said, according to the Mirror.

## The riding

North Island covers a large part of Vancouver Island's north end and the adjacent mainland coast, including Port Hardy, Port McNeill, Campbell River, and Gold River, and extends south toward the Comox Valley, according to the Mirror. It is one of the province's larger geographic ridings.

Nominations for North Island close October 3, 2026 at 1 p.m. Pacific time. Elections BC will publish the complete candidate list for the riding at elections.bc.ca once that deadline passes. Lopez confirmed her intention to stand before that deadline.

The Mirror published the announcement as a contributed article from the BC NDP, so the details about Lopez's background and goals come from the campaign's own statement. Lopez has not released a detailed costed policy platform.
