Outgoing Cranbrook City Councillor Norma Blissett announced on September 29, 2026 that she will run for the BC NDP in the Kootenay-Rockies riding in the October 24 provincial election. E Know reported the announcement.

"It's official. I'm running for the BC NDP in Kootenay Rockies. I've seen from my work on Cranbrook city council that having a positive relationship with the provincial government makes a difference," Blissett said in a statement quoted by E Know.

Blissett is currently serving on Cranbrook City Council. Her announcement did not specify a departure date from that seat, and E Know describes her as "outgoing."

## Campaign focus

E Know reported that Blissett's campaign will centre on three areas: supporting workers and businesses, developing housing and infrastructure, and ensuring residents can build stable lives in the region. She has not published a detailed costed plan as of this report.

Blissett pointed to her time on Cranbrook City Council as preparation for provincial politics. Municipal councillors in BC work directly with the province on housing approvals, road maintenance funding, and delivery of social services in their communities. A city councillor requesting funds or permits from Victoria has regular contact with the provincial ministries that a new MLA would work with.

Kootenay-Rockies covers a large area of southeastern BC, including Cranbrook, Kimberley, Invermere, and several smaller communities in the East Kootenay region. The riding borders Alberta to the east.

## Nominations and next steps

Nominations for all BC ridings close October 3, 2026 at 1 p.m. Pacific time. Once that deadline passes, Elections BC will publish the complete list of registered candidates for Kootenay-Rockies. Other parties have not yet announced their candidates for this riding as of this report.
