Both the BC NDP and the BC Conservatives committed on October 20 to extending SkyTrain along King George Boulevard to Newton Town Centre in Surrey, Global News reported. Both announcements came four days before voting day on October 24.

BC NDP leader David Eby said his party has set aside $250 million in its platform for transit expansion to Newton and offered to meet with newly elected Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum to develop the project. BC Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson committed to delivering the extension "on time and on budget," with no cost stated by the party.

## What each party said

The NDP's announcement came after McCallum, who had campaigned on the Newton extension, initially told Global News that only the Conservatives had committed to the project. Eby then announced the $250 million allocation. "There's actually money in our costed platform to expand SkyTrain to Newton," Eby said, according to Global News.

Doerkson said families in Surrey had been waiting too long. "Families in Newton shouldn't have to keep waiting on promises that never get delivered," he said.

The NDP statement cited $12 billion in major investments it says it has already delivered to Surrey. That figure comes from the party and has no published breakdown. The statement listed a new hospital, the SFU Surrey medical school, and the SkyTrain extension to Langley as part of that total.

The Conservatives said they would work with the federal government to fund the Newton extension. Neither party released engineering details, a route map with stops, or a construction timeline in their October 20 announcements.

## How the two commitments differ

The main stated difference is money. The NDP put a dollar figure on the table: $250 million in its platform. The Conservative commitment is in words only, with no cost estimate attached. Both parties said the route would run along King George Boulevard to Newton Town Centre. Neither gave a completion date.

The city of Surrey runs along the eastern boundary of Metro Vancouver. Newton is a neighbourhood in the city's south end, south of the King George SkyTrain station that currently anchors the south end of the line.

Voting day is Saturday, October 24, 2026. Advance voting closes today, October 21, at 8 p.m. at locations across the province.
