Around 1,500 households in Mill Bay on Vancouver Island face five consecutive overnight power outages starting the night of November 2, 2026, CHEK News reported on October 29. The outages will run from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. each night, and temperatures in the area are expected to drop near freezing during that stretch. Mill Bay is a community in the Cowichan Valley on the south end of Vancouver Island.

BC Hydro had planned and then cancelled the same outages twice before, in August and September, leaving residents frustrated and uncertain. Ted Olynyk, BC Hydro Community Relations Manager, told CHEK News that the previous cancellations were due to highway permitting delays, and that the upgrades are critical and must be done before winter settles in.

## Three cancellations in three months

Residents told CHEK News they are worried BC Hydro may cancel again and leave them without time to prepare. Some said the pattern of rescheduling made it difficult to plan for overnight cold without electric heating.

Olynyk did not give a cancellation guarantee, but said the work cannot wait any longer and must be completed before the cold weather arrives.

## Preparing for the outages

The outages run from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. each night for five nights in a row. With temperatures near freezing, residents who rely on electric heating, electric medical equipment, or who have children or elderly family members at home overnight should prepare backup arrangements before November 2.

BC Hydro urges customers to check its website for the latest updates on their area and to download the new BC Hydro app, which shows planned and unplanned outages by address.

Mill Bay residents can check whether their address is included and watch for any further schedule changes at bchydro.com. The first outage begins the evening of Sunday, November 2.
