The Conservative Party of BC published a Youth Jobs Plan on October 10 that would give businesses a tax credit for hiring young people in their first job.

The party said the plan is a response to what it describes as a collapse in entry-level work and rising costs that are pushing young British Columbians out of the province. The party says BC lost 20,000 jobs last month and that nearly 14,000 of those losses fell on young workers. Both figures are the party's own claims, published on its website, and have not been independently verified.

## What the plan includes

The centre of the plan is a First Job Tax Credit. The party says the credit would reward businesses that hire a young British Columbian who has not held a job before. The party says the goal is to help young people earn their first pay, gain real experience and take a first step in the workforce, while helping local employers grow.

The release does not include a dollar amount for the credit, a list of qualifying employers, or a description of how it would be administered.

[Lorne Doerkson](/bc/provincial-2026/candidates/lorne-doerkson), the Conservative leader and candidate for Cariboo-Chilcotin, announced the plan. [Ayla Dumais](/bc/provincial-2026/candidates/ayla-dumais), the Conservative candidate for West Vancouver-Sea to Sky, was quoted in the release.

"Twenty thousand jobs gone in a single month, and most of them belonged to young people like me," Dumais said, as quoted on the party's website. "I've watched my friends pack up and go because the NDP made BC too expensive to live in and too hard to get started."

## What the party says about affordability

The Conservative Party states in the announcement that Vancouver was ranked the least affordable housing market in the world this year and that four of the five most expensive cities to rent in Canada are in Metro Vancouver. The party did not name the source of those rankings in the release. These are the party's own claims.

## No response from other parties

No statement from the BC NDP or the BC Green Party responding specifically to this announcement was found in reports reviewed on October 10, 2026.
