BC NDP incumbent MLA Brittny Anderson confirmed on October 2, 2026, that she will seek re-election in Kootenay Central in the October 24 provincial election, todayinbc.com reported.

Anderson has represented the riding since 2020 and served as Minister of State for Local Government and Rural Communities. She held her campaign launch in Nelson on September 28.

She is a lifelong Kootenays resident and was previously a Nelson city councillor and member of the Regional District of Central Kootenay board before being elected to the legislature.

## What Anderson said

Todayinbc.com quoted Anderson as saying she is ready to continue the work ahead and committed to fighting for stable government that stands up against trade pressures from the United States. The statement connects her local re-election bid to the federal-provincial tensions that have been a theme across the campaign.

## Competition in the riding

Conservative candidate Gordon Skulnec, a former RCMP officer, has also declared, according to the same report. Todayinbc.com noted the BC Greens had not yet named a candidate for the riding at the time of publication.

Nominations closed October 3, 2026, at 1 p.m. Pacific time, so the full candidate list for Kootenay Central is now final.

## Anderson's record

Anderson has held Kootenay Central since winning it for the NDP in 2020. Her work in the legislature focused on local government and rural communities through her ministerial role. The riding covers a large part of the West Kootenay region and includes Nelson, the largest city in that part of the province. Todayinbc.com describes Anderson as a lifelong Kootenays resident with deep ties to the region's communities.
