The BC NDP promised on Oct. 1, 2026, to suspend 10 cents per litre from the provincial motor fuel tax and to give a provincial energy regulator new powers to limit what fuel suppliers can charge during periods of market volatility. Daily Hive Vancouver reported the announcement on Oct. 1.

The party says the two measures together could reduce retail fuel prices by up to 30 cents per litre. That figure is a projection from the BC NDP and has not been independently verified.

## The two parts of the proposal

The first part is a temporary suspension of 10 cents per litre from the provincial motor fuel tax, which Eby described at a Lower Mainland media event as intended "to provide immediate relief," according to Daily Hive.

The second part would give the BC Utilities Commission, a provincial body that regulates some energy markets, new enforcement powers. The party describes these as a "price guard" system. Under the plan, the commission would have the authority to cap profit margins added by fuel suppliers when market prices swing. Eby said oil companies expanded their margins by 20 cents per litre during recent market volatility. That figure comes from the BC NDP announcement; Daily Hive attributed it to Eby's remarks.

## What the party says drivers would save

The BC NDP put these projected savings in its Oct. 1 announcement: up to $20 per fill for a standard personal vehicle, and up to $116 per fill for short-haul commercial truck drivers. These are the party's own figures.

## The broader context

Daily Hive reported that gas prices in B.C. rose by 10 cents per litre in September due to a federal tax. Opposing parties questioned the timing of the announcement, with the Daily Hive reporting that energy pricing and taxation are expected to be central issues in the remaining weeks of the campaign. No specific response from the BC Conservatives or the BC Greens appeared in the Oct. 1 Daily Hive article.
