The BC Green Party published a wealth tax plan on October 5 that it says would raise $22.2 billion in the first year for childcare, transit, housing, and debt reduction. [Emily Lowan](/bc/provincial-2026/candidates/emily-lowan), the party's leader and candidate for Saanich North and the Islands, announced the plan in Victoria.

The party calls the proposal the Fair Share Act. It would apply to individuals with net wealth above $50 million and would have two parts: a one-time tax and an ongoing annual levy.

## What the party says the tax would charge

The BC Green Party says in its October 5 press release that the one-time component would apply at 5 per cent on wealth above $50 million, 10 per cent on wealth above $100 million, and 20 per cent on wealth above $1 billion. The annual component would charge 2 per cent, 3 per cent, and 5 per cent on the same three levels.

These are the party's own figures and have not been independently verified.

## What the party says the money would fund

The party puts the year-one revenue at $22.2 billion, with $5.4 billion in each subsequent year. The party says it would direct the money to four areas: universal childcare, free public transit, affordable housing, and provincial debt reduction. No breakdown of how much would go to each area was included in the October 5 announcement.

The BC Green Party has also said it would close tax loopholes and strengthen federal and provincial enforcement against tax avoidance as part of the same plan. The party has not named which specific loopholes it would close.
