01 / Introduction

## About Steve Morissette

Steve Morissette is the BC NDP candidate in Kootenay-Monashee on Elections BC’s list for the general election of October 24, 2026. He won the district in 2024 with 10,202 votes, 52.04% of the valid vote, according to the Elections BC statement of votes. The Conservative candidate, Glen Byle, had 7,616 votes and the Green candidate, Donovan Cavers, had 1,785.

My Kootenay Now reported in November 2024 that he had served on Fruitvale village council since 2014 and was elected mayor in 2018, and that his resignation as mayor took effect on November 5, 2024. The government’s page for him says he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Development in November 2024. Government releases in 2026 still name him in that role.

He chaired the legislature’s Special Committee to Review the Lobbyists Transparency Act. On April 22, 2026 he presented its report with 24 recommendations, and the House adopted it. Democracy Watch told The Tyee the recommendations would raise the risk of secret lobbying. In the legislature he also said he sits on the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services.

In September 2026 he told My Kootenay Now that he is against the proposed Record Ridge magnesium mine near Rossland, a project his own government has permitted.

His campaign page says that as mayor he led the building of a 37-seat daycare and a 31-unit affordable housing complex, and that Fruitvale adopted a plan to reach 100% renewable energy by 2050. My Kootenay Now reported in 2024 that he led the daycare and housing projects. The renewable energy plan is the campaign’s own statement, and voche.me did not check it against village records.

### Criticism of the lobbying committee’s recommendations

#### Candidate or party response
