## About Lorne Doerkson

Lorne Doerkson is the Conservative Party of BC candidate in Cariboo-Chilcotin on Elections BC’s list for the general election of October 24, 2026. He won the district in 2024 with 13,714 votes, 69.59% of the valid vote, according to the Elections BC statement of votes.

He was first elected in 2020 as the BC Liberal candidate, with 6,600 votes and 51.25% of the vote. CBC News reports he crossed the floor from BC United, the renamed BC Liberals, to the Conservatives in 2024.

Elections BC’s register of parties, dated October 3, 2026, lists him as interim leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia. CBC News reports that the remaining caucus recommended him and the party board approved him after Kerry-Lynne Findlay resigned on September 20, 2026. The party board said it would change the party constitution so he can stay on as leader if he wins. On October 3 the party’s candidate page for him calls him Leader, with no word interim.

The Vancouver Sun reports that he started in advertising sales at the Black Press-owned Salmon Arm Observer, later worked as a publisher of Black Press papers in Prince George, 100 Mile House and Williams Lake, then worked at a Chevrolet dealership and an auto glass business and became a financial planner with IG Wealth Management. It reports that he did not seek the party leadership in May 2026. The legislature’s record shows the House appointed him Assistant Deputy Speaker on February 12, 2026.

In the legislature in 2026 he asked questions on forestry job losses, closures of the 100 Mile House emergency department, highways, land title, food bank use and crime in Williams Lake, and he introduced a bill on Crown land transfers. The party page says he was a Black Press newspaper publisher for 20 years and later worked in financial planning; those are the party’s own statements.

### Buy a provincial water bomber fleet and fund wildfire prevention

On October 2, 2026 in Summerland, Doerkson announced a Wildfire Action Plan. A party release says a Conservative government would buy firefighting aircraft including water bombers, reduce dangerous forest fuels around communities, make prescribed burns easier to use without lowering safety standards, let qualified firefighting resources work faster in emergencies, and create a dedicated fund for early detection and prevention technology. He told reporters the plan is an investment of half a billion dollars.

### Whether an interim leader can stay on as leader

The party constitution bars an interim leader from becoming permanent leader, and a change needs a two-thirds vote of members, according to The Canadian Press and The Globe and Mail. NDP candidate Niki Sharma said the Conservatives cannot guarantee who would be premier if they win. A legal opinion the party gave to The Globe and Mail, dated September 25, says that if the party wins he would be invited to serve as Premier and could remain leader until the board calls a leadership election, which the opinion says could be more than 18 months away. An NDP campaign spokesperson called it a flimsy technicality. The Vancouver Sun reports that former NDP premier Ujjal Dosanjh said the NDP should stop questioning it and that the leader of a party with a majority would be premier. Elections BC told The Globe and Mail that the Election Act has no rule against an interim leader becoming premier and that this is the first time a major party has run a general election under an interim leader.

#### Candidate or party response

The party board said it would change the constitution to keep him as leader. Doerkson told Black Press Media the matter had been dealt with inside the party and that he would hold the position for four years if elected. He told The Globe and Mail on September 27 that his leadership "is not up for conversation".

#### Verified status and limits

On October 3, 2026 the Elections BC party register still lists him as interim leader, while the party's candidate page now calls him Leader. voche.me found no record of a members' vote on the constitution change by that date.

### NDP calls on him to drop two Conservative candidates over earlier remarks

Black Press Media reports that on October 2, 2026 NDP MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert called on Doerkson to drop Chilliwack North candidate Heather Maahs over comments she made in 2022 about LGBTQ+ people and the SOGI resource, and pointed to her 2025 invitation of a Christian lobby group to the legislature. It reports that on October 1 NDP candidate Jennifer Whiteside called for the North Island candidate to be dropped over her 2022 remarks about COVID-19 vaccines.

#### Candidate or party response

The reporter asked the party, the Chilliwack North candidate and Doerkson for comment. The party sent a statement from a Vancouver-West End candidate that criticised the NDP and said the party supports anti-bullying programs and age-appropriate classroom content. The article carries no statement from Doerkson.

#### Verified status and limits

Checked again on 2026-10-03. The party’s platform page still says the platform is coming soon and lists 17 plan titles with no text, so the only detailed party plans are the LNG plan and the Wildfire Action Plan, both read through party releases. The BC Energy Superpower Plan PDF has a broken text layer and was read only through releases that summarize it. His Facebook and Instagram pages show only a page title to a direct read, so nothing from them is used. The domains lornedoerkson.ca and lornedoerkson.com redirect to a parked-domain page with no campaign content, and no link ties them to him, so nothing from them is used. His role as deputy house leader comes from news reports and was not checked in an official record. His roles under BC United (critic for rural development, deputy whip) come from Yahoo News Canada only. His work history comes from his party’s page and from a Vancouver Sun profile that gives no dates; no employer was asked. The transcripts for his estimates debates and his Bill 15, Bill 14 and Bill 9 speeches were read in part only, and the 2026 votes on procedural motions, on Bill 6, Bill 12, Bill M217, Bill M241 and on the MLA orientation course motions are in the vote index but were not itemized here. Two Castanet reports of October 2 and 3 on his Kelowna and Summerland stops could not be opened (HTTP 403). Headlines on October 3 about his response to the Chilliwack North candidate and about OneBC talks were seen but the pages were not found, so no response from him on the candidate calls is recorded. A headline gives 400 million dollars for the water bombers; that page was not opened, and the half billion dollar figure comes from his own words in two reports. No 2026 all-candidates meeting for Cariboo-Chilcotin and no leaders’ debate date were found. Campaign finances were not reviewed. The questionnaire has not been sent.

Research status

## What voche.me has checked

Evidence reviewed on 2026-09-30: the Elections BC candidate list, party register and the 2020 and 2024 statements of votes; the legislature’s 2026 speech and vote indexes and 16 transcripts where he spoke; his party candidate page, 11 party releases and the platform page; his X page; and news reports from January to September 2026.

Second pass on 2026-10-03: the Elections BC candidate list (printed October 3) and party register (as of October 3), his party candidate page and platform page, the party releases of October 1 to 3, his X page, the 2026 speech and vote indexes (no new entries since 2026-09-30), 5 more transcripts, and news from September 27 to October 3. The party register still lists him as interim leader and his party candidate page now calls him Leader. No earlier entry was contradicted by a source opened on 2026-10-03.

His commitments on this page come from his words in the legislature, party releases that quote him, and news reports. Sections with no entry record that voche.me found nothing on this date. The WebSearch tool was at its usage limit on 2026-10-03, so the news search was limited to news feeds and the publishers’ pages.
