01 / Introduction

## About James Chumsa

Elections BC lists James Chumsa as the Communist Party of BC candidate in Cowichan Valley. The copy of the list read on 2026-10-03 is stamped October 3, 2026 07:00:07 PM, after the 1:00 p.m. (Pacific time) close of nominations that Elections BC's election page gives for that day. The other three candidates shown for the district are Bert Chen of the Conservative Party, Justin Douglas of the BC Green Party and Debra Toporowski of the BC NDP.

His name does not appear in Elections BC's 2024 statement of votes. In 2024 Debra Toporowski won Cowichan Valley for the BC NDP with 11,795 votes (40.51 percent). John Koury of the Conservative Party had 10,946 votes (37.59 percent), Cammy Lockwood of the BC Green Party had 5,773 votes (19.83 percent), Eden Haythornthwaite (Independent) had 341 votes (1.17 percent) and Jon Coleman (Unaffiliated) had 263 votes (0.90 percent). The legislature's lists of sitting members held by voche.me do not include James Chumsa, so he holds no seat. BC Ballot, a voter guide, says no previous run, term or finance report is on record for him. That is BC Ballot's statement, and voche.me has not checked it against each election record.

The Communist Party of BC's website has a page called Our Platform, with the party's commitments on taxes, transit, housing, work, health care, education, policing, Indigenous rights and electoral reform. The page does not name him. voche.me found no page, release or post on the party's site that names him as a candidate, no website of his own, and no news report or statement tied to his candidacy, so this page holds no biography and no commitments of his own.

voche.me has not contacted the campaign. The commitments listed below are the party's own text from its platform page, and each one says so.

</details>

No campaign website, party candidate page, party release or news report naming James Chumsa as a candidate was found on 2026-10-03. The search box on the Communist Party of BC's site returned two older articles that carry the author name James Chumsa-Jones (2018-08-25) and James Chumsa (2019-08-22). Neither page gives an author biography or says the writer is the candidate, so voche.me has not treated the two as one person and uses nothing from them. The party's home page does not name him, and no title in its list of posts dated 2026 does. The party's Our Platform page names no candidate, and its Contact Us page lists no candidates. BC Ballot's page for him gives only his name, party and district, and says no previous run, term or finance report is on record for him, which is BC Ballot's own statement. The Cowichan Valley Citizen's search box for his surname returned no result, and its election news page of 2026-10-03 named only municipal candidates. A search of Bluesky accounts for his surname returned accounts under similar names with no statement tying any of them to this candidacy, so nothing from them is used. Instagram and X were not searched directly because they ask for a sign-in. His biography, work, past roles, own commitments, all-candidates meetings in the district, campaign finances and endorsements were not found on this date. No published photo tied to the campaign was found, so the page has no portrait. The party's Our Platform page does not say which election it was written for, and its opening paragraph describes a snap election called by Premier David Eby, so voche.me lists its commitments as party text only. The questionnaire has not been sent.

Research status

## What voche.me has checked

Evidence reviewed on 2026-10-03: the Elections BC candidate list, Elections BC's election dates page, the 2024 statement of votes, the Communist Party of BC's home page, Our Platform page, Contact Us page and the search box on its site, BC Ballot's pages for James Chumsa and for Cowichan Valley, the Cowichan Valley Citizen's search box and election news page, the legislature's member lists, and a search of Bluesky accounts for his surname.

None of these sources holds a statement by James Chumsa. The party's platform is listed as party text. Instagram and X were not searched directly because they ask for a sign-in, and the WebSearch tool had reached its usage limit, so the name search used the sites above and two public search pages that returned no usable results. An empty section records what voche.me did not find on this date.
