## About Elenore Sturko

Elections BC’s candidate list, printed on October 3, 2026, shows Elenore Sturko as a candidate in Surrey South with the affiliation CentreBC. The list shows four other candidates in the district: Denis R Hurtubise (OneBC), Megan Knight (Conservative Party), Bill McConnell (BC Green Party) and Parik Tahlan (BC NDP).

She is the sitting member for Surrey-Cloverdale. The 2024 statement of votes shows that she won Surrey-Cloverdale for the Conservative Party with 10,268 votes, 48.31 percent of the valid vote, ahead of Mike Starchuk of the BC NDP with 9,682 votes (45.56 percent). In 2026 she is running in a different district, Surrey South. Peace Arch News reported on September 25, 2026 that she was first elected in Surrey South in a 2022 by-election, and quoted her: “I wanted to campaign where I began my political career, here in Surrey South.”

The records show these party labels, in this order. In the Surrey South by-election of September 10, 2022, the Elections BC statement of votes lists her under the code LIB, with 5,568 votes (51.83 percent). CBC and the Times Colonist report that she left BC United and joined the BC Conservatives in June 2024. CBC reported that she said she joined because of a promise that members would keep their own values and still have a voice in the party. The legislature’s data service lists her 2024 election under the Conservative Party of British Columbia, in Surrey-Cloverdale. On September 22, 2025 the Conservative leader, John Rustad, removed her from the caucus (the group of the party’s MLAs), and the legislature now lists her as Independent. Rustad said he needed the caucus united, and she said he accused her of plotting against his leadership, which she denies. The accountability section gives both accounts.

On September 18, 2026 she and seven other former Conservative MLAs joined CentreBC, and Peter Milobar became its leader (CBC, AM 1150). On September 22, 2026, the day the election was called, the other seven returned to the Conservatives and she stayed, according to The Canadian Press. CBC reported her saying her values no longer align with the Conservatives and that she cannot trust them. She became CentreBC’s leader and its only sitting MLA. The legislature’s data service, read on October 3, 2026, lists no active member under CentreBC and lists her as Independent.

CBC’s profile of September 22, 2026 says she was a reservist in the Royal Canadian Air Force in Yellowknife and the Northwest Territories, joined the RCMP in Langley in 2009, worked as a frontline officer in Yellowknife until 2018, then in Metro Vancouver, including media relations for the Surrey RCMP, before entering politics. CentreBC’s own page gives a similar outline and says 13 years with the RCMP. Those are the campaign’s statements, and voche.me did not check them with the RCMP.

In the 2026 sitting of the legislature, the speech index lists her on the budget debate, the estimates (the committee review of a ministry’s budget) of the Attorney General, Health and Public Safety and Solicitor General ministries, Bill 9 on freedom of information, the K’ómoks Treaty Act, Surrey Memorial Hospital, cardiac care south of the Fraser River, a review of the mental health system and the provincial sales tax on services. She introduced her own bill on April 13, 2026, the Interpretation Amendment Act, 2026 (Bill M241). On February 19, 2026 the House named her convener (the member who leads the committee) of the Special Committee on Police Complaints.

### Repeal section 8.1 of the Interpretation Act

On April 13, 2026 Sturko introduced the Interpretation Amendment Act, 2026 (Bill M241) to repeal section 8.1 of the Interpretation Act. She said the section requires every act and regulation to be interpreted consistently with the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, and that it moves decisions from negotiations with government into the courts. First reading was approved unanimously on a division, and she moved that the bill be listed for second reading, the next stage.

### Send the K’ómoks Treaty Act to a committee

On May 20, 2026 Sturko spoke for a motion to send Bill 20, the K’ómoks Treaty Act, to the Select Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs. She said she met Chief Roberts of the Wei Wai Kum First Nation, which raised a concern about overlapping territory, and that passing the act before the dispute is resolved is likely to lead to long, costly court cases. The motion failed 44 to 48. She voted no at second reading (48 to 42) and at third reading (53 to 39), and the act received royal assent, the step that makes it law, on May 28, 2026.

### Removed from the Conservative caucus

On September 22, 2025, after the party’s leadership review gave him 70.66 percent support, Conservative leader John Rustad removed Sturko from the caucus and from her post as public safety critic. Rustad told reporters he needed the caucus united to defeat the NDP, that she was an effective critic, and that he welcomes disagreement and criticism. Sturko said Rustad accused her of plotting against his leadership. The Tyee reported that she wanted more investigation of allegations about party memberships before the vote, and that she had wanted a secret ballot on his leadership within the caucus.

#### Candidate or party response

Sturko denied the accusation. She told reporters she had talked with other MLAs about Rustad’s leadership and was not organizing against him. She also said she was prevented from voicing her more socially liberal beliefs in the caucus. Rustad said he did not silence anyone. Rustad did not respond directly when asked about her account (Global News).

#### Verified status and limits

No official body has ruled on it. In September 2026 she told The Canadian Press that she and Rustad settled their differences in a recent meeting and that she holds no ill will. A CBC profile of September 22, 2026 gives the date of the removal as September 23, 2025, while the reports of September 23 and 24, 2025 describe Monday, September 22.

The name search was limited. The search tool voche.me uses for name searches had reached its usage limit on the day of the research. Result pages of the Bing search engine for five queries were read through a page-reading tool, and the DuckDuckGo search engine showed a check that asks for a human. No personal campaign website was found: elenoresturko.ca and elenoresturko.com redirect to a placeholder page with no campaign content. Her X page answered the page-reading tool with an error (HTTP 402), her Facebook page returned only her name and Instagram was not opened, so nothing from social media is used. CentreBC’s policy page says its first policy areas are still being written, so no platform from her or the party was available on 2026-10-03; the party entries are headings from the vision page. The legislature’s member page loads its names by script, so the member record was read from the data service behind it. That record still carries the older party British Columbia United and the district Surrey South at member level, while its 43rd Parliament entry lists Independent and Surrey-Cloverdale and its 42nd Parliament entry lists the Conservative Party of British Columbia. The same service lists no active member of the 43rd Parliament under CentreBC. The reports give two dates for her removal from the Conservative caucus: Monday, September 22, 2025 in the reports of September 23 and 24, 2025, and September 23, 2025 in the CBC profile of September 22, 2026. The record uses September 22. No government news release quoting her was found; a Bing search of news.gov.bc.ca returned none. The Prince George Citizen copy of the Canadian Press story answered with an error (HTTP 403) and was not read. Her service in the RCMP and the Royal Canadian Air Force Reserve comes from CBC and the CentreBC page and was not checked with either force. The Special Committee on Police Complaints entry rests on the motion of February 19, 2026. voche.me did not open committee records. Her 2025 speeches and votes and the 2022 to 2024 record were not reviewed. No 2026 all-candidates meeting for Surrey South was found. Campaign finances and endorsements were not reviewed. The questionnaire has not been sent.

## What voche.me has checked

Evidence reviewed on 2026-10-03: the Elections BC candidate list printed on October 3, 2026, the 2024 statement of votes for Surrey-Cloverdale, the statement of votes for the 2022 Surrey South by-election, the legislature’s member record from its data service, the 2026 speech index and recorded vote index for her, 26 transcripts, the CentreBC leader, team, vision and policy pages and its release of September 23, 2026, and reports from CBC, Global News, The Tyee, the Times Colonist (The Canadian Press), Peace Arch News and AM 1150 from 2025 and 2026.

The name search was limited. The search tool voche.me uses for name searches had reached its usage limit on the day of the research, so the search used Bing result pages read through a page-reading tool. No personal campaign website was found, and her X and Facebook pages gave no readable posts.

Her commitments on this page come from her words in the legislature in 2026. CentreBC’s policy page says its first policy areas are still being written, so the party entries are headings from its vision page. The accountability section holds one dispute, her removal from the Conservative caucus, and no official body has ruled on it.
