## About David Eby

David Eby is the BC NDP candidate in Vancouver-Point Grey on Elections BC's list for the general election of October 24, 2026. The copy of the list read on October 1, 2026 also names Michael Davis of CentreBC in the district.

He won the district in 2024 with 12,538 votes, 56.77% of the valid vote, according to the Elections BC statement of votes. Paul Ratchford of the Conservative Party had 7,622 votes and Devyani Singh of the BC Green Party had 1,925. The legislature record lists his election years as 2013, 2017, 2020 and 2024.

The legislature record shows him as Premier and President of the Executive Council, with a start date of November 18, 2024 in the current Parliament. A government release says he was first sworn in as premier on November 18, 2022. The legislature's member page says he became BC NDP leader in 2022. Earlier, the legislature record lists him as Attorney General in the 41st Parliament, CBC News reported his appointment on July 18, 2017, and a government release of November 26, 2020 names him Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Housing.

On September 22, 2026 he visited the Lieutenant Governor and asked her to dissolve the legislature, as CBC News and The Rocky Mountain Goat reported. Elections BC lists that day as the day the election was called. The BC NDP release that day quotes him calling the trade conflict with the United States an existential moment. CBC News reported that he later said the one-vote majority had stopped the government from doing what needs to be done.

In the legislature in 2026 he answered questions on the budget and deficit, on a court ruling about the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA), on Indigenous title and private property, and on health care. He planned a bill to pause parts of DRIPA, then delayed it and set the fall 2026 sitting as the deadline to agree on changes with First Nations leaders.

His campaign page says he worked as a human rights lawyer in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside before politics and that he led changes at ICBC and a crackdown on money laundering in casinos as Attorney General. Those are statements by his campaign.

### Criticism of the early election date

CBC News reported that the mayors of Delta and Victoria criticized holding the provincial vote one week after the municipal elections of October 17. The Rocky Mountain Goat reported the same criticism from the mayor of Valemount, who also named the cost of the election. CBC News reported Green leader Emily Lowan calling the election cynical.

#### Candidate or party response

Eby said a one-vote majority had stopped the government from doing what needs to be done, according to CBC News, and the BC NDP launch release quotes him saying voters deserve a say on the trade war.

#### Verified status and limits

Elections BC lists October 24, 2026 as Final Voting Day. voche.me found no ruling or official review of this dispute on 2026-10-01.

### Plan to pause parts of the Declaration Act

After a B.C. Court of Appeal ruling in the Gitxaała case, Eby said a bill to pause parts of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act was urgent and would be a confidence vote. The Tyee reported that First Nations Summit leader Robert Phillips and Union of BC Indian Chiefs president Stewart Phillip opposed the plan, and that NDP MLA Joan Phillip would not support it. The Conservative opposition wants to repeal the act.

#### Candidate or party response

The Tyee reported that Government House Leader Mike Farnworth said the bill would not come that week and would not be a confidence vote, and that Eby still said parts of the act must be paused. On May 27 Eby told the legislature the government had won leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada and would seek a lasting solution with First Nations leaders by the fall sitting.

#### Verified status and limits

voche.me found no bill to pause the act introduced before the election call on 2026-10-01.

### Conflict of interest complaint over recall law, 2018

Global News reported that in November 2018 BC Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson asked the Conflict of Interest Commissioner whether Eby, then Attorney General, should take part in debate on a bill limiting donations to recall campaigns while a recall campaign against him was planned.

#### Candidate or party response

Global News quotes Eby saying he was disappointed by the complaint and that it had no basis.

#### Verified status and limits

Global News reported that Commissioner Paul Fraser dismissed the complaint in a letter, saying it was filed under the wrong act and was premature. voche.me did not open the commissioner's letter itself.

His public record is larger than this page. The Office of the Premier budget debate (May 27 and 28, 2026) and his question period answers were read for his own words; other transcripts where the index lists him were opened only where cited here. voche.me did not read his 2026 statements on the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) title agreement with the federal government, the Cowichan (Quw'utsun) title ruling, or his Iran and Lapu-Lapu Day statements line by line. Figures he gave in debate and figures in BC NDP releases (rents, doctors hired, jobs, taxes paid by families, 800 American health workers, 5,000 condos) are his or the party's and were not checked against source data. BC NDP releases before September 22, 2026 were not listed on the party's media page, and the government news site said it was not being updated during the election, so earlier 2026 releases that quote him may be missing. The campaign page biography says he reduced average car insurance rates by 20 percent and that he was the longest-serving Attorney General in 30 years; voche.me has not confirmed those claims. The legislature's member page lists his work before politics, including at the BC Civil Liberties Association and Pivot Legal Society; voche.me did not check it with those groups. The Attorney General start date of July 18, 2017 comes from CBC reporting, and the legislature record gives no dates for his roles before 2024; voche.me did not open an official record of the date he left the Attorney General and housing posts. His 2013, 2017 and 2020 vote totals were not opened. The 2018 conflict of interest decision is known from Global News; the commissioner's letter was not opened. A Castanet report on the election call answered HTTP 403 and was not used. His Facebook page showed no readable text, his X page showed only a profile line, and his Instagram page needs a login, so nothing from them is used. No 2026 all-candidates meeting for Vancouver-Point Grey was found. Campaign finances and endorsements were not reviewed. The questionnaire has not been sent.
