01 / Introduction

## About Andrew Weaver

Elections BC lists Andrew Weaver as the CentreBC candidate in Oak Bay-Gordon Head. On the list stamped October 1, 2026 02:00:07 PM, the other accepted nomination in the district is Diana Gibson of the BC NDP. Nominations close at 1 p.m. on October 3, 2026, so more candidates may be added. The Times Colonist list of Vancouver Island candidates, updated October 1, also names Andrew Appleton of the BC Green Party and Stan Sipos of the Conservative Party as running there.

Diana Gibson won the district in 2024 with 14,519 votes (49.10 percent), according to Elections BC’s statement of votes. Stephen Andrew of the Conservative Party received 8,542 votes (28.89 percent) and Lisa Gunderson of the BC Green Party received 6,509 (22.01 percent). A search of that statement for the name Weaver found no match.

The party’s release of 2026-09-23 says he represented Oak Bay-Gordon Head in the legislature from 2013 to 2020. That release ties this candidacy to the earlier term. The legislature’s member data lists one Andrew Weaver, for Oak Bay-Gordon Head, elected in 2013 and 2017, a member of the 40th Parliament (2013 to 2017) and the 41st Parliament (2017 to 2020). That data gives his party as Independent in both parliaments.

Elections BC’s statements of votes show him elected as the Green Party candidate both times. In 2013 he received 10,722 votes (40.43 percent). In 2017, under the ballot name Andrew John Weaver, he received 15,405 votes (52.20 percent). The Times Colonist reports that he led the BC Greens for the last five years of his time in office, and that in January 2020 he stepped down to sit as an independent and did not run again.

In 2019 he introduced two private member’s bills that passed third reading, according to the legislature’s transcripts. Bill M209 would let British Columbia companies incorporate as benefit companies, which commit in their rules to social and environmental goals. Bill M206 would let a tenant end a fixed-term lease when staying in the home is a threat to their safety.

He told The Tyee he joined CentreBC in December 2025 and decided to run the day before he announced it, after the MLAs who had come to CentreBC from the BC Conservatives went back to that party. On his own site he says the early election had no public-interest reason, that he admires Elenore Sturko for staying with CentreBC, and that he wants to return to helping constituents. In a later post he writes that he has always been a federal Liberal and that he no longer feels the BC Greens, under their current direction, represent him.

The University of Victoria lists him as a professor in Earth and Ocean Sciences. The Province’s list of Order of British Columbia members shows his appointment in 2008. The party says he was a lead author on four reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. voche.me has not checked those two claims with the bodies that would know. voche.me has not contacted the campaign.

CentreBC has published no 2026 platform: its policy page says its Policy Committee is still writing its first policy areas. His views on health care, the cost of living, education, public safety, Indigenous reconciliation and transportation were not found in his 2026 posts or in reporting on 2026-10-01. His earlier term was read only in part: the 2019 and 2020 speech indexes and five transcripts from 2019. The speech indexes for 2013 to 2018, his recorded votes and the Votes and Proceedings that list who voted on his bills were not opened. Speeches from that term are not scored, because positions from an earlier term count only when a 2026 page repeats them. He writes that a later post will set out what he did from 2013 to 2020; it was not published on 2026-10-01. The party’s claims that he was a lead author on four reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and won the awards named on its page were not checked with those bodies. The dates of his leadership of the BC Greens come from reporting and the party release, not from a BC Green Party record. The reason he left the Green caucus in 2020 is not given here: the legislature record states no reason. His X and Facebook accounts, linked from his site, could not be read without signing in. A CTV News report of 2026-09-23 showed no article text to a direct read. Castanet and Business Examiner reports returned HTTP 403. No all-candidates meeting for the district in 2026 was found on 2026-10-01; the meetings found in a search were from 2024. Campaign finances and endorsements were not found. Nominations close October 3, 2026, so other candidates may still be added. The questionnaire has not been sent.

## What voche.me has checked

Evidence reviewed on 2026-10-01: the Elections BC candidate list and key dates page, the statements of votes for 2013, 2017 and 2024, the legislature’s member data, its 2019 and 2020 speech indexes and five transcripts from 2019, the CentreBC candidate, team, policy and news pages, the party’s release about him, his own website and its five posts from September 2026, his public Bluesky posts, the University of Victoria faculty list, the Order of British Columbia member list, and reports by The Tyee, the Times Colonist, Oak Bay News, Vista Radio and CHEK News.

His 2026 positions on this page come from his own website and from reporting that quotes him. CentreBC has published no 2026 platform. His positions from his earlier term are listed as part of his record and are not scored as 2026 commitments. An empty section records what voche.me did not find on this date.
