The Township of Langley says it will group skating lesson participants by skill level instead of age starting in Winter 2027, a change the Township announced on its own website on November 3, 2026.

Currently, the Township assigns participants to lessons based on their age. The Township says the new approach will allow skaters to learn alongside others at a similar stage, and that it aligns the program with standards used by other municipalities in the region. The Township has not published a review of the previous program or an independent assessment comparing the two methods.

Participants who are currently enrolled in fall skating lessons will hear from their instructor about their assessed skill level and which winter level to register for, the Township says. For families who are not sure where to start, the Township says skill assessments will be available during public skate sessions before registration opens. The Township has not yet published details of when or where those assessments will be held; it says the information will appear on its skating webpage as it is confirmed.

The Winter 2027 program schedule will be available to view starting November 17, 2026, at 10 am. Registration opens in two stages:

- Township residents: November 27, 2026, at noon
- Non-residents: December 4, 2026

The announcement does not list which Township arenas will offer lessons or how many levels will be available. The Township says more information is coming on its skating webpage.

The new council, sworn in at the inaugural meeting on November 2, now oversees Township recreation services. Mayor Jay Lundgren and the councillors made several campaign promises about parks and recreation facilities, including a [parks and recreation facilities plan for every community](/bc/langley-township-2026/candidates/jay-lundgren#promise-ls-parks-recreation-facilities-plan) with funds and timelines, and [free admission to Township recreation facilities for children under 12](/bc/langley-township-2026/candidates/jay-lundgren#promise-ls-free-rec-under-12). Those commitments are tracked at the [promise tracker for Langley Township](/bc/langley-township-2026/tracker).

Residents who want to register for Winter 2027 skating lessons should check the Township's skating webpage starting November 17 at 10 am, and register on November 27 at noon if they live in the Township.
