Suspected scammers are calling Langley residents using a phone number that appears on call display as the Langley RCMP detachment, the Mounties warned on November 5. The callers pose as officers investigating identity theft and ask for personal and banking information.

Langley RCMP Cpl. Mansoor Sahak told the Langley Advance Times that the calls have been reported by multiple residents. "Scammers can make it look like they are calling from a legitimate phone number, including a police detachment," Sahak said. He said the RCMP advises anyone who receives such a call to hang up and call the detachment back using a publicly listed number to verify whether the call was real.

## What the callers are doing

The callers are posing as police officers investigating identity theft, the Langley Advance Times reported. Once they have a resident on the line, they request personal, financial or banking information. The displayed number appearing to come from the RCMP is designed to make the call appear legitimate.

Sahak reminded residents that a number on call display cannot be trusted on its own. "If you receive a call claiming to be from police and are unsure if it is legitimate, hang up and call the detachment directly using a publicly listed phone number to verify the call," he told the Langley Advance Times.

## What to do if you get such a call

The Langley Advance Times reported four tips from Cpl. Sahak:

- Never give personal, financial or banking information over the phone to an unknown person.
- Keep in mind that scammers can alter their number to show up differently on call display.
- If you do not recognize a number or were not expecting a call, let it go to voicemail first.
- If a caller claims to be police, ask for their name and a file number, then call the detachment to verify before saying anything further.

The Langley RCMP detachment's publicly listed number is 604-532-3200. Residents can also report suspected fraud online through the RCMP's website.

## If you have already given out information

The Langley Advance Times reported that anyone who believes they have been targeted can file a report with Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200. They can also contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or at antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca, which tracks fraud reports across Canada and publishes current alerts.

Residents who receive one of these calls and are unsure whether it is legitimate should hang up and call 604-532-3200 to verify directly with the Langley RCMP before sharing any personal information.
