01 / Introduction

## About Steve Ferguson

Steve Ferguson was re-elected to the Township of Langley Council on October 17, 2026, with 12,044 votes, eighth of the 20 candidates for the eight seats, in the Township's official results declared on October 21, 2026. The Langley Advance Times reported that Langley Strong won the mayor's chair for Jay Lundgren, six of the eight council seats and all five Township seats on the Langley Board of Education, and that Ferguson and Michael V. Pratt were the only two of the four Progress for Langley councillors on the ballot to keep their seats. The new Council's inaugural meeting is on November 2, 2026.

The Township's council page says he was first elected in 1988, was elected again in 2018 and has served eight terms as a Township councillor. Its results pages give him 9,176 votes in 2018, sixth place, and 9,953 in 2022, third place. The Aldergrove Star reported in August 2022 that he placed ninth in 2014 and lost his seat, and in November 2022 that the inauguration marked 25 years on Council for him, the most of any member. The Township's page says he has lived in Langley for 40 years, was a special education teacher, a school counsellor and a small business owner, and now sits on the Board of Variance, the Parcel Tax Roll Review Panel and several Metro Vancouver committees, including housing, liquid waste and zero waste, is co-chair of the Seniors Advisory Committee and an alternate on the Mayors' Council on Regional Transportation. The Star reported that he began his career as a teacher in the Delta school district. In the Star's 2022 questionnaire he wrote that he took six years away from Council to complete a Master's degree in counselling psychology; that is his own account.

The Star reported on August 24, 2022 that he joined Contract With Langley, the organization Eric Woodward founded, which Elections BC's register now lists as Progress for Langley; he said then that the community was changing fast and that he wanted to be part of a team with a plan. He lives in Brookswood, by his own account in the Advance Times' candidate profile of October 8, 2026, which describes him as a small business owner and teacher. Progress for Langley's team page calls him an incumbent councillor, retired teacher and counsellor, and a long-time member of many community organizations.

His votes in the last year of the term are on the record. The minutes of the Regular Council Meeting of March 9, 2026 record that the 2026 to 2030 financial plan bylaw passed first, second and third reading with the four councillors outside Progress for Langley opposed, so with his vote in favour, and that he seconded the amendment adding a slow streets pilot to the draft Transportation and Mobility Strategy. The Advance Times reported on April 28 that his motion asking staff, the RCMP, bylaw officers and firefighters to look at the concerns of High Point residents, including response times, passed unanimously; on June 17 that, in the debate on the Township's audited statements, he pointed to an operating surplus of $203 million in 2025 against $159.9 million the year before; and on June 26 that he voted with the four councillors outside his organization, five to four, for an amendment to design the Fort Langley rainbow crosswalk against vandalism. On August 7 the paper reported that Langley Strong's campaign manager had accused Progress for Langley of breaking the Township's rules on campaign videos, naming footage of Ferguson at his desk in the civic facility among the examples; Woodward called the complaint a smear. The paper reported no ruling. No report of a court matter names him.

At the Fort Langley Community Association's all-candidates meeting on September 21, 2026, asked for one measurable result he would deliver for Fort Langley by the end of the term, he named the move of Marina Park to a new location, which he said was under way, the Advance Times reported. He took part in the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce debate on September 29. In the Advance Times' candidate profile he wrote that he was running to keep building what he called the most liveable community in the province, and listed the fire halls, arenas, dry rinks, soccer facility, fields and 208 Street work of the last term as his organization's achievements.
