Councillor · Langley Township 2026

# Margaret Kunst

- Elected, Councillor17,338 votes, 1st of 20. Official count, Township of Langley. [All results](https://voche.me/bc/langley-township-2026/results#councillor)

Re-elected to Langley Township Council on October 17, 2026, with 17,338 votes, the most of the 20 council candidates, for a third term. A councillor since 2018, elected twice without a slate, she joined Langley Strong in May 2026. She voted against the 2026 budget and against the June 2026 change that made it easier to censure a councillor, and ran on infrastructure that keeps pace with growth, the full cost of a project before the vote, and moving heavy trucks out of Fort Langley.

Margaret Kunst was re-elected to the Township of Langley Council on October 17, 2026, with 17,338 votes, the most of any council candidate, in the Township's official count, declared by the Chief Election Officer on October 21, 2026. The Township's results page prints Langley Strong as her elector organization. The Township's own council page lists her as a councillor in her second term; its results pages give her 8,543 votes in 2018 and 10,484 in 2022. The Langley Advance Times reported on May 5, 2026 that she and the three other councillors outside Mayor Eric Woodward's majority joined Langley Strong. By her own account she ran an agricultural supply business with her husband for 25 years and was operations director of the PuCKS Powerplay Foundation for ten years. The minutes of March 9, 2026 record her vote against the 2026 to 2030 financial plan, and the Advance Times reported her vote against the June 15, 2026 change to the Council Procedure Bylaw. At the Fort Langley all-candidates meeting she named heavy truck traffic through the village as the first thing she would tackle.

01 / Introduction

## About Margaret Kunst

Margaret Kunst was re-elected to the Township of Langley Council on October 17, 2026, with 17,338 votes, first of the 20 candidates for the eight seats, in the Township's official results declared on October 21, 2026. The Langley Advance Times reported that the Langley Strong team she ran with won the mayor's chair for Jay Lundgren, six of the eight council seats and all five Township seats on the Langley Board of Education, and quoted her on election night: she said the Township had needed a change in leadership. The new Council's inaugural meeting is on November 2, 2026.

The Township's council page lists her as a councillor in her second term, and its results pages record 8,543 votes for her in 2018 and 10,484 in 2022, when she placed second. The Township's page says she is co-chair of the Heritage Advisory Committee, an alternate director on the Tourism Langley board and an alternate member of the Fraser Valley Regional Library board, and that she has been the operations director and program manager of the PuCKS Powerplay Foundation, which helps children take part in sport, for ten years. By her own account on the Langley Strong site she was born and raised in Langley, ran an agricultural supply business with her husband for 25 years, has volunteered in refugee sponsorship and newcomer settlement, and has been a director of the Union of BC Municipalities. voche.me has not checked the business or the UBCM role.

The Advance Times reported on May 5, 2026 that Kunst, Barb Martens, Kim Richter and Blair Whitmarsh, the four councillors outside Woodward's Progress for Langley majority, had joined Langley Strong with Lundgren as its candidate for mayor. On her Langley Strong page she writes that she was elected twice without a slate and joined the team to work with people who share her priorities, and that she will keep making her own decisions. In the Advance Times' candidate profile of October 8 she wrote that she lives in Brookswood and was running because there was more work to do.

Her votes in the last year of the term are on the record. The minutes of the Regular Council Meeting of March 9, 2026 record that the 2026 to 2030 financial plan bylaw passed first, second and third reading with Kunst, Martens, Richter and Whitmarsh opposed, and that she also opposed an amendment paying $25,000 for holiday lights at Williams Park from Council contingency. The Advance Times reported that she called the budget process short on transparency and said residents deserved better. On June 15, 2026 Council passed changes to the Council Procedure Bylaw that lowered the vote needed to censure a councillor from two-thirds to a majority and ended the equal rotation of acting mayor; the Advance Times reported that Kunst and Whitmarsh voted against, that Richter and Martens left the meeting citing conflicts of interest, and that Kunst said the changes could create a perception that council processes may be used for political purposes. On April 19 the paper reported that her motion to apply to the Canada Community Building Fund on behalf of the BC Farm Museum passed unanimously, and on June 26 that she voted with the majority for an amendment to design the Fort Langley rainbow crosswalk against vandalism.

On her Langley Strong page she lists what she calls her work of the 2022 to 2026 term, including the motion for a debt financing summary report, the creation of the Township's Accessibility Committee, the 2023 tree protection bylaw update, a traffic safety review of 224 Street and Murrayville, and a bylaw amendment restricting vape stores; that list is her own account, and voche.me has checked only the votes named above against the minutes and the Advance Times. Langley Strong's fire department fact check of October 10, 2026 says, citing the minutes, that she seconded the 2022 motion asking for full-time staffing at the Brookswood fire hall and the February 2026 amendment adding a fire life safety educator; that is the organization's account.

At the Fort Langley Community Association's all-candidates meeting on September 21, 2026, asked for the one thing she would tackle, she picked heavy truck traffic through the village, with local delivery zones and enforcement so that trucks stop using Fort Langley as a route to other places, the Advance Times reported. In Langley Strong's community pillar release she said Aldergrove's small things come first, sidewalks, potholes, lighting and visible police; in its farmland release she called for a new Rural Plan written with farmers; and in its tenth pillar release she said residents would be consulted before big decisions and get their turn to speak. On her page she writes that Council should look at the whole cost of a project, including staffing and operating it for years, before deciding to build.

### The whole cost of a project before Council decides
