Councillor · Langley Township 2026

# Barb Martens

- Elected, Councillor16,641 votes, 2nd of 20. Official count, Township of Langley. [All results](https://voche.me/bc/langley-township-2026/results#councillor)

Re-elected to Langley Township Council on October 17, 2026, with 16,641 votes, second of the 20 council candidates. A retired Vancouver police officer first elected in 2022 at the top of the council poll, she joined Langley Strong in May 2026 and wrote its two promises for the mental health of first responders: a peer support unit and a trauma dog for the Langley RCMP and the fire department. She also promised a written rule that taxpayers get a say on every borrowing, police and fire staffing that keeps pace with growth, and free recreation for children under 12.

Barb Martens was re-elected to the Township of Langley Council on October 17, 2026, with 16,641 votes, second of the 20 candidates, in the Township's official count, declared by the Chief Election Officer on October 21, 2026. The Township's results page prints Langley Strong as her elector organization. The Township's 2022 results give her 11,534 votes, the most of any council candidate that year, and the Langley Advance Times reported that she was elected then with the Contract with Langley slate. The Township's page for her says she worked nine years for the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction and 20 years as a Vancouver Police Department officer, and is a founding member of BC Women in Law Enforcement. In January 2024 she was named BC United's candidate for Langley-Walnut Grove, and in September 2024 she decided against running after the party stopped its campaign, the Advance Times reported. Langley Strong's first platform release, on August 25, 2026, said she brought forward its two promises for first responders' mental health. The minutes of March 9, 2026 record her vote against the 2026 to 2030 financial plan.

01 / Introduction

## About Barb Martens

Barb Martens was re-elected to the Township of Langley Council on October 17, 2026, with 16,641 votes, second of the 20 candidates for the eight seats, in the Township's official results declared on October 21, 2026. The Langley Advance Times reported that the Langley Strong team won the mayor's chair for Jay Lundgren, six of the eight council seats and all five Township seats on the Langley Board of Education. The new Council's inaugural meeting is on November 2, 2026.

The Township's 2022 results give her 11,534 votes, the most of the 28 council candidates that year. The Advance Times reported in January 2024 that she had been elected as part of the Contract with Langley slate, and on May 5, 2026 that she, Margaret Kunst, Kim Richter and Blair Whitmarsh, the four councillors outside Mayor Eric Woodward's majority, had joined Langley Strong. On her Langley Strong page she writes that she will keep voting by her own judgment on every issue. The Township's page for her names her co-chair of the Heritage Advisory Committee and a trustee of BC Women in Law Enforcement, and lists past seats on Metro Vancouver's housing and regional parks committees, the E-Comm board, the Fraser Valley Regional Library board and the Tourism Langley board, and the chair of the Township's standing committee on police priorities.

The Township's page says she holds a BA in psychology and education from Trinity Western University, worked nine years for the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction and 20 years as a sworn Vancouver Police Department officer in patrol, neighbourhood policing and crime analysis, was the department's liaison officer to housing operators and residents, received two Chief Constable commendations and two BC Borstal Association awards, and is a founding member of BC Women in Law Enforcement. The Advance Times reported the same police career in January 2024. By her own account she has lived in Walnut Grove since 1994, is secretary of the Langley Sunrise Rotary Club and chairs the SASSY Awards committee. voche.me has not checked the awards or the volunteer roles.

In January 2024 BC United named her its candidate for Langley-Walnut Grove in that year's provincial election, the Advance Times reported, and she said crime, disorder and homelessness were provincial matters she wanted to work on. In September 2024, after the party's leader ended its campaign, she told the paper she had decided against running as an independent and that it was not her time to run for provincial office.

Her votes in the last year of the term are on the record. The minutes of the Regular Council Meeting of March 9, 2026 record that the 2026 to 2030 financial plan bylaw passed first, second and third reading with Kunst, Martens, Richter and Whitmarsh opposed, and that she seconded Kim Richter's motion to set the flat-rate utility due date in early July, which Council referred back to staff with the four Langley Strong councillors opposed. The Advance Times reported that on June 15 her motion to lower the speed limit at the Five Corners roundabout in Murrayville from 30 to 20 km/h was defeated five to four, that on the same day she and Richter left the meeting citing conflicts of interest before the vote on the Council Procedure Bylaw changes, and that in June her amendment asking staff to design the Fort Langley rainbow crosswalk against vandalism passed five to four. On July 27 the paper reported that she, Kunst and Whitmarsh had opposed a closed-meeting decision to authorize up to $500,000 for the legal costs of Woodward and councillors Baillie and Rindt in a petition seeking their disqualification; she said no information had been given beyond a court file number. The petition's claims had not been tested in court when the paper reported on it. Langley Strong's fire department fact check of October 10, 2026 says, citing the minutes, that she seconded the November 2022 motion for 40 more career firefighters and the 2023 loan bylaw for the Brookswood fire hall; that is the organization's account.

Langley Strong's first platform release, on August 25, 2026, said she brought forward its two promises for the mental health of first responders: a peer support unit within the Langley RCMP and the Township fire department, and an operational stress intervention dog funded with a charity. Its safety pillar of September 28 says she wrote it with Teresa Townsley; in it she said growth without staffing is dangerous for a community. In the taxpayers release of September 8 she said that if taxpayers carry the risk of a borrowing they get a say on it, every time, and that the team would put that rule in writing. At the Fort Langley all-candidates meeting on September 21 she proposed a more durable thermoplastic crossing, as Nanaimo uses, in place of paint for the rainbow crosswalk, and at the Chamber of Commerce meeting on September 29 she said farmland stays farmland, the Advance Times reported.
