The City of Delta has launched a pilot program at five elementary schools to find ways to make the trip to school safer, with families at those schools able to take part in a survey until November 20.

The School Neighbourhood Active Travel Plan (SNAP) pilot is a joint effort of the City of Delta, Fraser Health and the Delta School District, the North Delta Reporter reported October 29. The program asks students, parents and teachers how children get to and from school and what makes those trips feel safe or unsafe.

## Which schools are included

The five schools are Cougar Canyon Elementary, Heath Elementary, Jarvis Traditional Elementary and Richardson Elementary, all in North Delta, and South Park Elementary in Tsawwassen.

The city plans to develop a proposed improvement plan for each school, setting out suggested road changes in the surrounding streets based on what it learns.

## How to take part

Families at the five schools can complete a short survey at letstalk.delta.ca/snap until Friday, November 20, 2026. Parents and school staff can also join a walkabout near their school between November 2 and November 20, to look at problem spots together with city staff. Anyone interested in joining a walkabout should contact their school's principal, the Reporter said.

Students will give feedback through short in-class surveys. There will also be on-site surveys with parents and caregivers at each school.

## The city's safety goal

Steven Lan, Delta's general manager of engineering, said the SNAP pilot will "help identify future road safety projects and inform the city's overall Vision Zero Strategy."

Two years ago, the city installed about 30 additional speed humps at school sites after a review of school zones. Delta police ran increased traffic enforcement in school zones at the start of this school year.

The new Delta City Council, which holds its inaugural meeting on November 2, will take responsibility for the SNAP pilot's results. Families who want to attend council meetings or follow agendas can visit pub-delta.escribemeetings.com.
