Re-elected to Coquitlam council on October 17, 2026, with 15,062 votes, for a third term. An entrepreneur who first won a seat in 2018, he ran with no elector organization on infrastructure that keeps pace with growth, a stronger local economy, emergency preparedness, rules for e-scooters and e-dirt bikes, and taxes managed through the City's tax stabilization program.

Steve Kim was re-elected to Coquitlam City Council on October 17, 2026, with 15,062 votes in the City's official count, declared on October 21, third among the 20 council candidates. He ran with no elector organization. Freshet News reported on August 31, 2026 that he was campaigning for a third term and quoted his release: he first asked for support in 2018. The City's council page says he holds degrees from the University of Western Ontario and Korea University and has chaired the Economic Development Advisory Committee. His campaign site lists five priorities: plan responsibly for growth, grow the local economy, protect quality of life and safety, advocate for senior government money, and manage taxes through the tax stabilization program and asset management.

01 / Introduction

## About Steve Kim

Steve Kim was re-elected to Coquitlam City Council on October 17, 2026. The City of Coquitlam's official count gives him 15,062 votes, third of the 20 council candidates, and the Chief Election Officer declared him elected on October 21, 2026. The City's results print no elector organization for any candidate, and VoteMate lists him as an independent. The Tri-Cities Dispatch reported that he was running for a third term and that the four incumbents were the top four vote-getters.

The City's council page says he was born in Vancouver to South Korean immigrants, grew up in Coquitlam from the age of eight, holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario and a Master of Arts from Korea University, and has worked for more than 20 years as an entrepreneur in technology, digital media, entertainment and the non-profit sector. The page lists him as chair of the City's Economic Development Advisory Committee, vice chair of the Universal Access-Ability Advisory Committee, and council's representative on the Coquitlam River Watershed Roundtable and the Tri-Cities Food Security Table. Metro Vancouver's list of board members names him as an alternate director for Coquitlam. By his own account, on his campaign site and in his Freshet News profile, he has been executive director of Access Youth Outreach Services for two years and owns a communications business, Boilingpoint Group; voche.me has not checked these with the society or the business registry.

The City's council minutes of February 13, 2023 record that he moved the receipt of the Finance Standing Committee's minutes. The Dispatch reported his words and votes on several 2024 to 2026 decisions. In October 2024, on energy and carbon rules for new buildings, he said he was unsure whether Coquitlam was balanced or lagging: "The industry has a remarkable way of suddenly adapting and using it as a competitive advantage." In December 2025 he voted for the 2026 budget and said council may need to look at new revenue streams in the future. In June 2026 he voted for a 404-unit townhouse project on Burke Mountain, and in the debate on the Province's new density bonus rules he said the City should get affordable housing built instead of taking cash. The same month he recused himself from a discussion of the Building Safer Communities gang prevention program because of his work with another organization, and supported a liquor licence for an indoor golf business on Lougheed Highway. In July 2026 he voted for the City's new unit mix rules, calling them "a good balance", and told a committee that the City needs to remove its own barriers to starting a business, Freshet News reported.

In the Dispatch's questionnaire of October 13, 2026 he said the 3.37 per cent tax increase was reasonable, that he accepts contributions from individuals in the development industry but none from corporations, that he is concerned about the effect of provincial small-scale multi-unit housing rules on mature trees and parking, and that the winter shelter at səmiq̓ʷəʔelə (Riverview) opened too late. In his Freshet News profile he said his top issue is livability as the city grows, and named property theft, traffic safety and reckless e-scooter and e-dirt bike riders as safety concerns.
