01 / Introduction

## About Matt Djonlic

Matt Djonlic was re-elected to Coquitlam City Council on October 17, 2026. The City of Coquitlam's official count gives him 15,905 votes, the most of the 20 council candidates, and the Chief Election Officer declared him elected on October 21, 2026. Freshet News reported that he had 251 votes more than Craig Hodge, elected mayor the same night, and quoted him at Hodge's victory party: "I have been waiting weeks to say that." The City's results print no elector organization for any candidate, and VoteMate lists him as an independent.

Freshet News reported on March 19, 2026 that he was first elected in 2022 with 8,925 votes, that he has served on the Coquitlam Public Library board, chaired the Accessibility and Inclusion, Sports and Recreation and Multiculturalism advisory committees, and represented council on the Tri-Cities Homelessness and Housing Task Group. The City's council page adds the Parcel Tax committee and Metro Vancouver's Flood Resiliency Committee. By his own account, on the City's page and his campaign site, he worked in the provincial government on housing, finance, mental health and municipal affairs before council and was a library board trustee for ten years; in his Freshet News profile he lists SHARE, the Coquitlam Legion and the library as places he has volunteered. voche.me has not checked these with those bodies.

The City's council minutes of February 6, 2023 record that he moved the final reading of a zoning amendment bylaw for a development at 3423 Victoria Drive, carried unanimously. The Tri-Cities Dispatch reported several of his council positions. In October 2024, on energy and carbon rules for new buildings, he suggested the City could move its final deadline from 2028 to 2027. In February 2025, on corporate sponsorships, he said: "Generally speaking, I like public space being for the public." In December 2025 he said council's budget talks had focused on what the City could stop doing, and the 2026 budget with its 3.37 per cent tax increase passed 7 to 1. In June 2026 he voted for a 404-unit townhouse project in the Partington Creek neighbourhood of Burke Mountain, which passed 5 to 3. In July 2026 he voted for new rules capping studio units at 25 per cent of a development and setting minimum bedroom sizes, which passed 7 to 2; the Dispatch quoted him saying the market had been catering to the "investor class". The same month he told council the planned Fraser Mills Community Centre would take pressure off the Poirier pool.

He announced his campaign on March 19, 2026, Freshet News reported, saying he would lobby TransLink for more bus service, the Province for an urgent and primary care centre and non-profits to build subsidized housing on surplus City land. In the Dispatch's questionnaire of October 13, 2026 he said council had passed requirements for two- and three-bedroom condos and minimum bedroom sizes, that the City still needs to approve more townhouses and purpose-built rental, and that his campaign's donations all came from individuals living in BC. Asked about Flock or Axon cameras, he said the federal government has contracted Axon for RCMP body-worn cameras across Canada. He endorsed Craig Hodge for mayor; his statement is on Hodge's campaign site, and he spoke at Hodge's launch on October 15, 2025.

## What voche.me has checked

Researched on 2026-10-30 through the seven search steps listed below: the City's declaration, results per tabulator and voting-night release, the City's council page for him, the City's council minutes of February 6, 2023, his campaign site (the home page holds his platform; the In the Community page holds photo captions), his VoteMate page, and reporting by Freshet News and the Tri-Cities Dispatch.

His campaign's account of his work in the provincial government and his ten years as a library board trustee is the campaign's own and was not checked with those bodies. The campaign site's lists of things council has built or approved are the campaign's; the council decisions on this page come from the City's minutes and from the Dispatch's reports. His Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky accounts were not read, because each showed only a login page or no posts to scripts.
