01 / Introduction

## About Mike Hurley

Mike Hurley was re-elected mayor of Burnaby on October 17, 2026. The City of Burnaby's count gives him 28,946 votes, and the City's chief election officer declared him elected on October 21, 2026. Freshet News reported that this was 58.43 per cent of the 50,326 ballots cast, and that Heymann Yip of Burnaby First came second with 9,250 votes. The City's candidate profile prints no elector organization for him.

CBC News reported in October 2018 that Hurley, a former firefighter running as an independent, defeated Derek Corrigan, who had been mayor for 16 years. CBC also reported that he was president of the B.C. Provincial Firefighters Association from 2008 to 2016. The City of Burnaby reported in October 2022 that he was acclaimed as mayor for a second term, with no other candidate for the office. Daily Hive reported that he worked for the Burnaby Fire Department for 30 years before he entered politics.

Metro Vancouver says its board first elected him board chair in June 2024. CBC News reported that the board chose him over Vancouver Councillor Lisa Dominato on June 28, 2024, after Delta's council removed Mayor George Harvie as its representative. Metro Vancouver announced on November 28, 2025 that Hurley and Anmore Mayor John McEwen were acclaimed as chair and vice chair for a one-year term.

By his own account, on the City's mayor page and his campaign site, he joined the Burnaby Fire Department in 1988 and served as lieutenant, captain and acting assistant chief. He says he led the BC Professional Fire Fighters' Burn Fund in raising money for the Burn Fund Centre, a place to stay for burn patients and their families, and that he received the Queen's Golden Jubilee, Diamond Jubilee and Platinum Jubilee medals. voche.me has not checked these with the fire department or the Burn Fund.

News reports describe three council decisions from his first two terms. Burnaby Now reported that council voted 6 to 3 in April 2024 to incorporate the Burnaby Housing Authority, a City-owned company to build affordable rental homes. Councillors Pietro Calendino, Sav Dhaliwal and Richard Lee wanted a delay of one year, and Hurley spoke against the delay. Daily Hive reported in June 2025 that council approved his motion asking the Union of BC Municipalities to call on the Province to repeal the building code rules that allow apartment buildings up to six storeys with one staircase. Global News reported in December 2025 that he proposed a motion to limit new homes to four units on lots smaller than 623 square metres and to require one parking space for each unit.

His 2026 platform has 23 promises in six areas: housing, community buildings, public safety, money, jobs, and arts and culture. In the statement he gave the City, he wrote that he would keep pressing the Province to give Burnaby back control over residential zoning and to repeal Bill 44, and would work to get the Burnaby Hospital redevelopment back on track. On election night he told Freshet News: "I think the people of Burnaby are speaking and saying, yeah, they support the direction we're going."

## What voche.me has checked

Researched on 2026-10-29 through the seven search steps listed below: the City's candidate profile, results and declaration, the City's mayor page, every page of his campaign site that concerns the 2026 campaign, his VoteMate page, and reporting by Daily Hive, Freshet News, CBC News, Global News and Burnaby Now, with Metro Vancouver's own release on its board chair.

His campaign's figures for his first two terms, among them 25,000 new homes and renter protections it calls the strongest in North America, are the campaign's own, and voche.me has not compared them with City records. His posts on Facebook and Instagram were not read, because both sites showed only a login page. Council minutes were not read directly: the council decisions above come from the named news reports. No candidate questionnaire from a newspaper or an advocacy group was found for him.
