01 / Introduction

## About Maita Santiago

Maita Santiago was re-elected to Burnaby City Council on October 17, 2026. The City of Burnaby's count gives her 16,292 votes, the fourth-highest total of the 42 council candidates, and the City's chief election officer declared her elected on October 21, 2026. She ran with the Burnaby Citizens Association. Freshet News reported that she kept her seat for a second term.

The Burnaby Beacon reported in June 2022 that the BCA chose her to run for council in place of another candidate who stepped aside. The City's 2022 results give her 11,349 votes. Burnaby Now reported after that vote that she was the first Filipino elected to Burnaby council, and described her as an immigration consultant and community organizer who moved to Burnaby from the Philippines in 1977. It also reported that she worked for more than a decade as a constituency assistant for NDP MLA Mable Elmore, ran a family daycare, and chaired the Mabuhay House Society. She told Burnaby Now that she first ran for office in 1993, for Vancouver council with the Coalition of Progressive Electors, and that housing would be her first priority on council.

The City's councillor page lists her as chair of the Access Advisory Committee, vice-chair of the Public Safety, Social Planning and Environment committees, a member of the Public Library Board, and the City's representative on the Fraser Health Municipal Advisory Council. By her own account, on that page, she was a citizen representative on Burnaby's Social Issues Committee before she was elected, and she studied at Simon Fraser University.

In the statement she gave the City, she wrote that she was running for re-election so that Burnaby stays a caring and well-managed city, and that in her first term she and the BCA delivered more affordable housing, better accessibility, stronger community connections and better climate action. Her promise tracker holds the BCA platform's city commitments.

## What the BCA promised for the city

The Burnaby Citizens Association's 2026 platform has three commitments: getting the basics right, standing up for Burnaby, and public schools. For each area it lists what the BCA says it delivered and what it plans next. The BCA won seven of the eight council seats.

Its plans for the city include starting at least 1,000 rental homes through the Burnaby Housing Authority by 2030, opening the Cameron, Burnaby Lake and Brentwood community centres, keeping the City free of debt with low and predictable property taxes, a park within walking distance of every home, two new City-owned child care centres, more sidewalks and street lights, and pressing the Province to re-commit to Phase 2 of Burnaby Hospital. The promise tracker lists each city commitment on the platform.
