01 / Introduction

## About Jen Mezei

Jen Mezei was re-elected to the Burnaby Board of Education on October 17, 2026. The City of Burnaby's count gives her 19,876 votes, the fourth-highest total of the 16 candidates for the seven trustee seats, and the City's chief election officer declared her elected on October 21, 2026. She ran with the Burnaby Citizens Association. Its seven trustee candidates took all seven seats, and Freshet News listed her in September 2026 as one of three BCA trustees seeking re-election.

She was first elected in 2018. The Burnaby Schools post on the board sworn in that November lists her as chair of a board with five new members, and the board's minutes show her chosen as chair again for 2021 to 2022. Burnaby Now reported that she won a second term in October 2022. The board chose her as vice-chair on November 26, 2024 and again on December 16, 2025, and in December 2025 also chose her as its provincial councillor to the BC School Trustees Association and its representative to the BC Public School Employers' Association.

The BC School Trustees Association lists her as a director from Burnaby on its provincial board for 2023 to 2025. The 2018 Burnaby Schools post says she had served as chair of the Burnaby District Parent Advisory Council and as president of the BC Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils. By her own account, in the statement she gave the City, she has chaired the English Language Learners Consortium for six years, and in the Freshet News questionnaire she said she chairs the board's policy committee.

In the Freshet News questionnaire she named three top issues: support for students through equity and inclusion, provincial operating funding that falls short of what students need, and provincial capital funding for the growth in enrolment. She wrote that she will continue to put classroom services and supports first in the budget. Her promise tracker holds her own promises from that questionnaire and the BCA platform's school commitments.

## What the BCA promised for schools

The Burnaby Citizens Association's 2026 platform has a section on public schools. It lists what the BCA says its trustees delivered and what they plan next. The BCA ran seven trustee candidates, and the City's count shows all seven elected.

Its plans for schools include pressing the Province to build schools for the number of students Burnaby expects, making the case for new schools at Brentwood West, Bainbridge Village and Brentwood East, asking for stable funding for learning supports, keeping the district's SOGI policy strong, setting rules for AI in schools, and growing the school meals program. The promise tracker lists each school commitment on the platform.
