01 / Introduction

## About James Wang

James Wang was re-elected to Burnaby City Council on October 17, 2026. The City of Burnaby's count gives him 15,058 votes, the sixth-highest total of the 42 council candidates, and the City's chief election officer declared him elected on October 21, 2026. He ran with the Burnaby Citizens Association.

The City's official results for 2014 give him 19,490 votes, the eighth and last of the council seats that year. Burnaby Now reported that he was re-elected in 2018, and that in 2022 he had the second-highest vote total; the City's 2022 results give him 13,025 votes. Daily Hive and Freshet News reported in 2026 that he was running again with the BCA. By his own account, in the statement he gave the City, he moved to Canada in the late 1990s and served two terms as a Burnaby school trustee before he was elected to council.

The City's councillor page lists him as chair of the Public Safety Committee, vice-chair of the Planning and Development Committee and of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee, and a national board director of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. The BCA's page says he led the work on the City's 2025 Community Safety and Well-Being Plan and chairs the Mayor's Task Force on Economic Growth and Resilience. The Asian Pacific Post's list of the 2014 RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Award winners includes him.

By his own account, on the City's councillor page, he worked as an architect in China, earned an MBA in Canada, and has led fundraising for the Burnaby Hospital Foundation and the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. voche.me has not checked these.

In the statement he gave the City, he wrote that he would keep working to keep property tax increases among the lowest in the region while making Burnaby more affordable, sustainable and livable. The BCA's 2026 platform also promises low and predictable taxes. His promise tracker holds that promise and the BCA platform's other city commitments.

## What the BCA promised for the city

The Burnaby Citizens Association's 2026 platform has three commitments: getting the basics right, standing up for Burnaby, and public schools. For each area it lists what the BCA says it delivered and what it plans next. The BCA won seven of the eight council seats.

Its plans for the city include starting at least 1,000 rental homes through the Burnaby Housing Authority by 2030, opening the Cameron, Burnaby Lake and Brentwood community centres, keeping the City free of debt with low and predictable property taxes, a park within walking distance of every home, two new City-owned child care centres, more sidewalks and street lights, and pressing the Province to re-commit to Phase 2 of Burnaby Hospital.
